fist timer substrate ?

Innoced my first jars a week ago, and I started looking for bulk sub...
I've done a ton of reading and have some ideas, but I'm looking for experienced suggestions.
Horse poo is unatainable to me at this time, Coco coir isn't locally available, and I don't want to do the internet thing right now. Straw is available, but messy, would prefer not to use it if possible. I can get bagged cow manure from the nursery,
I figure I'll use Peat/verm for casing. What should I use for the bulk substrate? Would soaked and pasturized bird seed work? I know thats available and relatively cheap.
I also have about 6 BRF cakes innoced as my spore bank/backup,
I tried 1 LC, innoced 1/2pint of water 5% corn syrup by weight with 1/2 cc spores from syringe, I see no signs of myc though, (1 week)
Suggestions appreciated.

For your first bulk substrate project just skip the casing layer, try it later after success without one.
I'd say go with cow manure & vermiculite or coco-coir & vermiculite.
Bird seed is used as grain spawn not as a bulk substrate. Bird seed in a bulk sub (like coir, manure) is collectively the substrate. ~P~

I know bird seed is usually used as a grain spawn, was just wondering if I could use it as a bulk sub too, I guess the answer is no.
Is the bagged cow manure ok? cuz field manure will not be possible for me for a little while longer. are there any additives I should look out for in the manure?

Will work fine if you want to grow mold :/
If you have access to straw I'd use that. It's not nearly as messy as other subs.
Accidentally overcook a pot of horse poo or spill a bucket of coir in the kitchen :-D

You don't have pet stores where you live? It's often sold as reptile bedding.

checked 3 pet stores which are all the ones I know of in my town, Petsmart, a local guy and a really small local guy. All I could find was a 3" disk for hermit crabs, and at $3 each thats just unfeasable.
So 100% straw? I mean I'll throw in some coffee and gypsum because I have them around the house, but seems like straw wouldn't have the nuts needed.
thanks.

from what ive read straw works fine you just get less flushes. i could be talking out of my ass though you could add worm castings at like ten percent, coffee and gypsum too.

lol seriously I know my way around the reptile section of the pet store, have had dozens of pet lizards, currently have a pretty lep gecko who is a little over 13 years old. It's just not there, I may try another pet store further away tomorrow since I don't have to be at work. But I'm not holding out hope that I'll find Coir in the next week.
I was really hoping for someone to tell me if they have had experience with bagged manure?
I will use 100% straw if it is necessary but trying to make it a last resort.

I have never used bagged cow manure before I have always used field cow manure. Is it possible that field cow manure is available to you? You did not mention that prior. Here is a simple way to pasteurize your poo/straw combo substrate. http://www.shroomery.org/8396/How-To-Pasteurize-Straw-Poo-Pillowcase-Method

Those rat bastards at petsmart don't carry the 3for1 special in-store. Have to order it online. Thought if you order $60 worth you get 5.99 flat rate shipping or some such shit.
Every once in awhile you can find a good deal on buck coir online.
However, and I should have pointed this out earlier. You're best off sticking to the standard pf cake method on your first go. No since in adding extra complications on your early grows. Will also make it hard to diagnose if something goes wrong.
Alternatively you could just use vermiculite and coffee grounds. Since it'll be atleast a few weeks before your cakes are ready.. start saving coffee grounds (store them in the freezer).

I asked because most just ask the petsmart guy if they have coco coir and they go "duhhhhh no?"
Few have used bagged cow manure..alot have been unsuccessful. If you do use it, best to add gypsum and lots of verm, maybe some perlite. I have not personally used it. Search "Black Kow" if you want to find some who have used cow manure.

I don't get my coir from petsmart. I find petsmart to be over priced and uninformative. I get my coir bricks, walk in, from a shop called Petco. They have the three packs you can walk-in the store and buy. Check your local listings. http://www.petco.com/.

Sponge: I did make 6 pf cakes 2 each of my 3 strains as spore harvest and backup incase my grain doesn't work out, but the PF cake thing isn't for me in the long run I'm sure of it, too much work/too little return, so I figured I should just go for grain on a small monotub. And since the grain is already innoced no sense in backing down now lol. thanks tho.
Scat: sorry I may have come across a little rude there, I know alot of little kids do post for help but I did some serious reading (maybe 30 hours) and watched RR's videos beginning to end before I posted a question. Thanks for helping.
Since I have at least another 2 weeks left before my jars are ready to open and I have a week of work left, I have a little more time than I thought,
I may be able to come up with some field manure since I shut down on april 16th, and will have time during daylight hours to roam fields, now just gotta find some fields lol.
I really didn't want to go with internet purchases, but I guess I'll order some Coir as a backup.
This is what I should order from petsmart.com then?
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752603#prodTab1
I'll also look for a petco nearby.
Thanks again to all who responded I appreciate the backup.

That's the right stuff.
I can't remember off the top of my head which member it is but one guy on here actually goes to a police horse stable and collects horse poo there for his 'garden'.

I hear you on that. I've been working on a hybrid method that takes PF to bulk without added risk of contamination.

Depending on what exactly you mean by bagged cow manure, it works.
At least the pallet form did always worked for me, no matter what brand I used.

Umm I don't know how to be more clear lol its cow manure, in a plastic bag sold for garden fertilizer, 20 to 30 lb bags it seems. If I can't find free I may buy 2 bags and use it for sub in one of my tubs,
I found a petco about 30 miles away, I wouldn't go just for coir, but I gotta go halfway there anyway on another errand so I'll take a chance on it.
BTW anyone who uses a ton of coir, petco has a good deal on their website now, $13 for 6 bricks and you get a shipping deal if you buy $60 worth... I'm not sure coir is for me tho.
Also I do have a PC so the only advantage of pf tek (no pc required) doesn't apply to me. And I gotta brag, I got the grain right on the first try, it rolls around in the jar and everything just like the guy in the "lets grow mushrooms" video gave the big crazy thumbs up about
