Most European countries don't really want you to move there. With their health care systems and welfare they have to make sure there's a good reason for letting someone in.
The paperwork is a nightmare, and you need some good supporters on your side if you're going to get approved. You better have a good job that their citizens can't do or you'll never make it.
Everything is locked down over there. You can't just come in on a visa and stay forever. They know every person and every address, and their tax situation is such that they know everyone and every legal payment or sale.

You know it's illegal to cultivate, or possess fresh or dried mushrooms in Holland, right?
It was banned in 2008 after some tourists killed themselves...

Also, I'm not sure where you're from fastfred - but you're a little off...
We are overrun with immigrants, legal and illegal. Loads of people move here on student/work visas, and just dissapear. Not long ago, a 'college' was busted for bringing in Asians on student visas, it turns out it was just some guy who claimed he was running a school, and he'd helped thousands get in.
And our government doesn't know every payment or sale at all, not sure where you've heard that from?
Maybe there's some US media propaganda going around about how free we aren't
But, Australia/New Zealand... They won't have you!

There's the VAT and a bunch of taxes on things like just owning a TV set in at least the European countries I know much about.
Maybe it's harder to control on mainland countries.
Anyway my point is that you can't just go over there and set up shop. It's very hard to get citizenship or long term (multi-year) visas over there.

Wrong, it's illegal to cultivate, or possess fresh, dry. Trust me, Google it if you like.

For a short while, it wasn't enforced, but now the streets aren't filled with shops like they used to be.
And you would get busted if you were caught growing, like you would anywhere else. But spores/etc are still legal, so you can grow, and tbh, I'd imagine there are more places to buy that kinda thing over there too.
