totally frustrated

ok, my friend is totally at a loss. He has a terrarium thats a big bin humidified via shroomgod's tek (humidity levels around 80%). In the past he had an ultrasonic on a timer(about 90%), and before that perlite(95%+). With ALL of these teks he has experienced rotting mushrooms AS THEY ARE GROWING. Mostly the caps are affected, with some shrooms almost having no caps at all. The rotting has a black fringe that starts off as a few specs, then expands to consume a large portion of the cap. Sometimes its even within the stalk. He is about to give up the hobby altogether because it seems as though mushrooms are impossible to grow without them rotting out as they are growing. What should he do?

it might be the spore print he's preparing them from or the area in which you're growing the shrooms in

My guess is that the caps are getting wet allowing bacteria to grow.

1) Make sure that water is not dripping from the top of the terrarium onto the fruit. Try raising one end of your terrarium so any condensation runs downhill rather than raining down.

2) Do your best to sterilize the terrarium before you use it. Soak that sucker in 10% bleach solution for an hour or two and then rinse it out really good. Wipe it down with alcohol after it dries a bit before you put your casings or cakes in.

3) Clean out the inside of your vaporizer and any tubing between it and the terrarium. Change any filters, etc.

4) Don't mist the fruit! I don't know if your friend is misting or not, but if so, make sure the water doesn't get on any of the mushrooms.

5) Increase the air exchange. Stale air is a goldmine for bacteria...

6) Be sure that anything going into the terrarium is clean, including your arms and hands. If you reach in there, wear short sleeve shirts. Wash your hands and arms with alcohol first.

7) Make sure that the trays you are using are clean (if you are casing).

8) Sterilize the casing layer before you apply it, if you are casing.

Remember, the contamination has to come from somewhere. If it isn't showing up until the fruiting phase, then it probably is getting introduced around that time. Watch for standing water and stagnent air... these are both bad to have. Don't give up!!!
