Stumbled upon this today, its a news article from National Geographic http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/04/100409-lightning-mushrooms-japan-harvest/
definitely worth a read.
any thoughts? I've seen some people talking about experimental stuff like using magnets and electricity here on the forums, maybe they were right!

Lightning Storms are great for shrooms and plants.
I wonder if it's to do with ionisation making N soluble?

"Repeated tests have shown that the fungi react best when they're exposed to between 50,000 and 100,000 volts for one ten-millionth of a second."
Even if you have enough voltage then you need the system to only react for 1/10,000,000 or 1E-7 of a second. Not to mention it should not be directly exposed to the mushrooms. They will fry of course.

i read some time ago, in GGMM i think, some growers try to increase fruiting applying electricity to shiitake blocks.

when lightning strikes it releases large amounts of nitrogen and other gasses from the air. i believe plant and mushroom growth during storms have something to do with this phenomena. i could be wrong though, just like any other time.

And very interesting read. In the article they are speculating that it has more to do with the mycelium reading the electrical burst as a potential threat and increasing production... I don't like this idea near as much as the potential for ionization/release of certain nutrients idea. Seems like the potential threat thing would be the most obvious (and the obvious is never what ends up as fact in the longrun in mycology, right?), these scientists aren't really thinking outside of the box on this one...

No your absolutely right man, I took a class at school called the Fungal Jungle it was a bio class solely about the fungus kingdom. And one of the questions on an exam was about lightning and how it is beneficial to fungal growth and that was exactly the answer that it releases nitrogen into the soil that mycelium thrives from. I also learned the in the amazon rainforest the 90% of the under layer of soil is giant mycelium networks beyond our wildest dreams and without that the rainforest would die because of so many plants that have mycorrhizal relationships with fungus. Just a cool though, aside from knowing how to cultivate its nice to know some basic biology too!

Apparently, very few persons posting in this thread have actually read the article. It ISN'T nitrogen introduced into the air, but the high-voltage shock applied directly to the substrate that triggers the reaction. We've known for centuries that physical shock is a pinning trigger with shiitake and the ancient chinese farmers used to beat the logs with a sledge hammer to stimulate pinning.
I spray water with great force on my substrates and it accomplishes the same thing. I've also whacked them with a stick and gotten the same results. I've recently used electric shock in the way these folks did, applying 50K volts for a fraction of a millisecond with 'some' promising results, but picking up the blocks and dropping them a few inches back onto the racks still produces more primordia. This is interesting because during my years of following the Gyromitra esculenta (drools) They NEVER i meen NEVER appear before the first lighting storm. Right after plopp plopp pop plopp. First lighintg storm going on right now yeey O_O aaand i just shit my pants i think lightning struck just a few meters from the house when i finished that sentence i guess it said Damm right dude (does it really have to be that loud thou
(Side note (Gyromitra esculenta) is a very lethal mushroom but tastier then morels just needs proper preparation to remove the toxins.)

I have this one spot that is a very good producer of mushrooms and it happens to be in the middle of the high voltage power lines that give electricity to town...

Not to trivialize, however, if an electromagnetic field is applied in conjunction with a static magnetic field, changes in ionic transport of cells occur.
Large scale: Global, the Earth provides the static magnetic field, lightning the electromagnetic.
Not only are gasses ionized, releasing nitrogen - the process by which ionic transport occurs, in the first place, is also made more viable.
This may be due to application of electromagnetic field, or simply shock of energy. We can then translate this to kinetic energy and express a possible connection between how the application of two different forms of energy facilitates ionic transport.
Small scale: Lab, we can apply different kinds of energy and see what this does...
This may be a device worth looking into, something to re-create a miniature scale environment with its own magnetic field and experimentally generated electric ones. The hypothesis being that a large electric current applied at first primes the pump of generation, then, lesser currents could be applied to see if they facilitate ionic transport as seen by potential changes in rates of growth.

This is fascinating because during the Middle Ages in Europe, back before people had microscopes or knew what spores were, it was thought that mushrooms were caused by thunderbolts. I always thought this belief stemmed from the thunderstorms that typically occur at the end of summer before the mushroom season, but it seems there might be a more direct explanation.
