Sounds like you need to RFTM a little more, humidity seems too low if you have growth on caps..GoodLuck

To start with, it probably was a mistake to throw out those two cakes with yellowish patches. Depending on "how yellow" the patch was it was most likely just excretions from the mycelium (waste products). Of course if it's really dark yellow or just funky looking then it's probably contamination but a slight yellow discoloration isn't unheard of.

Also you don't HAVE to wait for pinheads to form before taking them out of the jar, just as long as you cake is 100% colonized...

You MAY have some overlay, not too sure, I'd have to see them to be sure. When you mist them, does the moisture get absorbed into your cakes, or does the moisture just slide off your cakes? It's possible they have a hard-overlay covering them. If this is the case you can try a couple of things like injecting your cake in several spots with some sterile water, or you can try to scratch the surface of your cakes to expose a little of the inner cake (don't go too deep, just scratch the surface). After scratching give them plenty of humidifiction and try cold-shocking them...

If it's not overlay, you may have dead mycelium...Not much you can do for them if this is the case. You could try casing them and crossing your fingers too..

Good luck

Thanks sutec,

I'll give it a try. What's the procedure for cold shocking?

Just a correction.

To cold shock you need to lower the temperature by 10 (f) for at least 6 hours, preferably 24.

Since the optimal temperature for p.cubensis is 86 (f) you should lower the temp to 76 (f). A good way to achieve this is to get some ice cubes, stick them in a plastic ziplock bag, place the bag in a bowl and the bowl in your chamber. Replace the ice if it melts. When done, remove the bowl (and it's contents). With a little luck you should see a flush in a day or two.

Also make sure you are giving them plenty of O2 and light. It's recommended to fan your terrarium at least a couple of times a day, preferably more and the "preferred" on/off cycle (according to Paul Stamets) is a 12/12 hour cycle. When you cold shock I would keep more light, lots of air and PLENTY of humidification during the cold shock phase, this should give the mycelium the idea that it's time to fruit...

Good luck.
