PC for how long?
    #1232536 - 01/19/03 10:54 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys I have a 12psi pressure cooker. A couple site told me to pressure cook my 1/2 pint pf tek jars with the substrate in them for 20 minutes and a couple sites told me to pressure cook for 45 minutes. This really confused me. I dont know which one to believe.

Go for the 45 min. The extra 25 min is worth the added comfort of knowing everything is sterile and you won't have to redo the jars from scratch.

At what point does the BRF become overcooked at 12psi? With all the studying I've been doing I've run across a few mentions of the substrate jars getting cooked for too long.
45-60 minutes sounds pretty safe but I was just wondering what you guys have found to be the PC "cutoff point"?

Thanks for the education!!
Peace,

I don?t know, the longest I coked them was 90 minutes, and they did well.
But 45 minutes in the pressure cooker is enough, go for 60 minutes if you want to be super save

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

Thanks for the answers. 20-30min sounds reasonable. I just used the pressure cooker for the first time last night for 30min. Before that I used the pot boiling method for an hour and that always dried up my substrate inside the jars. Wouldnt using the pressure cooker for 50min have a greater chance of drying up the substrate since it is being sterilized by a higher temp and pressure or does the extreme steam penetrating the jars inside the pressure cooker prevent that from happening?

Hopefully, steam won't be penetrating anything! It is the high temperatures that sterilize the jars. You should make sure to cover the innoculation holes in the jar lids with tin foil, or you will have some soggy jars! 45 - 60 minutes should not dry out properly hydrated jars.
