Low yeilds
#1236011 - 01/21/03 07:05 AM (22 years, 30 days ago) |

I am fairly new at growing mushrooms, but have read almost every guide and how to out there. I am using the PF tek method, in 1/2 pint jars and using vermiculite and a substrate. My terrarium is a 10 gallon aquarium with a plastic wrap lid, and perlite on the bottom. The temp is 76*F and 85% humidity constant. I also fan the cakes twice a day. What could cause the yeilds to be low, I consistently get one or two off each cake but not nearly as much as I would like.
Any suggestions would be great.

I think you might need to get your humidity higher also for cakes.

For dunking should I just do it before the first flush or wait until the second??? Is there any way I can get the humidity up with the set-up that I am currently using??? Also is 76 degree's too cold to hot or just right??? Are you suggesting that the humidity be closer to 90% or even higher?

You could lightly mist the sides of the terrarium after you fan. But Be careful not to over do it.

Well I am assuming the humidity gauge is accurate seeing that I just recently purchased it. But what might some signs of low humidity be???

Well there is plenty of water droplets just so everyone knows. Vatoloco I will have to look into finding out if my humididty gauge is accurate. But this still leads me back to the origional consern. Regardless I am getting very low yeilds per cake.
The mushrooms only seem to grow off of one spot on the cake per flush and thats it I need to fix this issue ASAP

Never trust a hyrgrometer. It sounds like you have enough humidity if water is condensing and dripping on your walls. How do your cakes look?
Your going to want to dunk your cakes. It's amazing how much of a difference this makes.
Also, if you contine to use cakes, I suggest using the Inner Reservoir Tek at http://www.fanaticus.com Helps a lot. Good luck

I would 1. Dunk the cakes in cold water 12 hours in fridge 2. Raise temp to 80 3. Add water to the perlite and more misting 4. Add a stronger light source for a longer time

How much longer do you think the light should be on for?? (It is on for 2 hours right now per day. And the temp is a constant 76F)

No disrespect to poogrower, but
1. agree 2. disagree - 74-78 is optimum for fruiting. some strains warmer, but these are in the minority 3. disagree - wet perlite is wet perlite. it'll get it above 95% for sure unless the tub is enormous 4. disagree - tiny light amounts for pinning only. then they seem to grow faster in the dark

With 85%, if you mist a couple times a day, and make sure your container isn't leaking air, you should have no problems.

Ya see that is the issue as far as I know I am not leaking anything. I am using a 10 gallon aquarium with plastic wrap over top.

Are you sure about this? If this is being read off a hygrometer, I wouldn't trust it. A lot of them don't go over 85%.

That is true it may be off and not reading humidity correctly, but again if the humidity is right why am I getting such low yields.
