Shiitake On Coir.

Hello,
So I was doing up a bin of cubes and had 7 1qt shiitake jars. So I used up the rest of the sub and made a shiitake mono (sub mix: approx brick coir, 2 qt verm, 500ml coffee) It has been sitting since the 26th and it has not done anything yet pin wise. The cube bin is on its second flush already. The mycelium is really thick and started growing up the sides of the bin about an inch and now the whole mix has started shrinking away from the sides. Possibly a sign of gathering moisture to make fruit? First time growing shiitake and from what I read I should have done it on a sawdust brick lol. Is this going to work? or is it just going to shrivel up and die? Is there anything I can do to help it along?

I have read once a RR's post about shiitake and coir, and he wrote that they won't fruit on coir.
Please report if you succeed.

Shiitakes are a wood lovers species. http://sporeworks.com/store/search.php?mode=search&page=1
Try THIS for fruiting your shiitakes.

Follow standard shiitake procedures re: dunk, cold shock, etc and hope for thebest. You find a strain that will fruit on coir- clone and isolate.

I've never yet found a shiitake strain that will fruit on coir, and I've tested about 20 so far. For some reason, it hates coir. RR

Yes. Shiitake is a woodlover so, what if you would try a spawn run with some wood (skewers or plain wood chips) added to the coir.

Thanks for all the replies. What it the procedure for dunk and shock? 24hr soak 12hr fridge? or just 12hr cold water soak? At this point I would be really surprised if anything happened its only been about 12 days tho. I will be re-doing my lawn this weekend so maybe I will get some wood chips and top soil and make a little shiitake bed in the garden with the colonized bin if I cant get it to fruit as is. I need to get on doing the rest of my eddys, I have been busy with other things tho so they are sitting in dishes in the fridge. When I start doing those I will do a little research into proper procedure for sub and fruiting tho lol. You really have to respect the mycelium in the fact that it is a living thing and will grow where it wants when it wants and if you try to make it do something it doesn't want to do than it just wont do it lol. I should post up some pics of this bin tho. I will do that later today if I get a chance.

Shiitake outdoor beds almost never fruit. You can fruit from hardwood logs above ground, or in sawdust blocks indoors or out, but shiitake doesn't like being in the ground. RR

Do you have an optimum nutrient LC for shiitake?

Well... I was just about to throw this away so I flipped it over inside the bin and WHOOT I would have to say that looks like a Shiitake mushroom growing on Coir.

Just previewed and it looks like those pics are pretty greenish but no trich was on it just looks tinted in the pic.

Grats! It would be neat if you could isolate a strain that prefer coir
I would clone him and take spore print.

Well I just wanted to give you an update on the shiitake bin. Been about a month now since I made it. Got a 1/2 flush Whoot. I will post the method/tek later as well as try it again to see if I get the same results.

Yea, that looks petty typical for coir. Lots of mutants and small fruits. I'm sure there's a shiitake strain that could be developed for coir, but since coir in the US/Europe is 100 or more times the price of sawdust I doubt it would be of much use to anyone outside the tropics where they have tons of the stuff laying around.
I'm working on isolating a few shiitake strains that will perform on straw, and am running into the same problem. I can get organic straw so have an interest in finding a strain that will perform on it. RR
