 puncturing holes question??

ok, i finally found some vermiculite. i'm ready to pressure cook....ok, ive read 2 processes. one with lids, and one with foil. most people say foil is the best way to go. the lid procedure says to puncture holes(for innoculation) in the lid, then put a layer of foil on it before you PC. then the foil method doesnt mention holes. it just says put the folded(2 layer) "lid" on them, then another layer of foil. my question: do i puncture the 4 holes in the 2 layer aluminum foil "lid" and then add the 3rd layer, or do i just put the 2 layer on, then the third?
did any of this make sense? if not, i'll tey to explain more..

Nope. There is no real substitute. Some places online sell it, otherwise you may just have to wait a few months.

don't ask cuz most part timers will say they don't have it just to get you off there back so they don't have to work. go check lowe's they still have it here and its close to freezing weather. its near soil additives so just look lowe's carries the sta-green kind and it comes in a red bag from what i've seen.

I used Perlite on my first batch, they have it in stock at Wal-Mart now.

perlite and vermiculite are two very different things. they are used in soil for the opposite reasons: perlite is used to increase drainage and help dry the soil while vermiculite is used to absorb moisture and retain it in the soil. for similar reasons, they are not interchangeable in the pf tek. perlite will not expand to absorb and hold moisture like vermiculite.

Native American cultures. i'm not Native American (120% scot here), but i love what he stands for believe everyone should enjoy life as much as possible like he does.
i'm going to go to a few nurseries here in town to see if they will part with some. i'm also going back to a few places to look a little bit harder. wish me luck!

"Essentially perlite and vermiculite are used in the horticultural industry because they both provide aeration and drainage, they can retain and hold substantial amounts of water and later release it as needed, they are sterile and free from diseases, they have a fairly neutral pH (especially perlite which is neutral), and they are readily available, non-toxic, safe to use, and relatively inexpensive. As a rule of thumb, perlite tends to last longer, has a more neutral pH, and functions much better in hydroponics, outdoor applications, lawns and gardens (in part because it is stronger). Nevertheless, for decades they both have been used by professionals, dedicated amateurs and gardeners."

just try making a cake out of perlite and you will learn soon enough. vermiculite holds it shape and doesn't "clump" like perlite will. You will end up with a pasty perlite rock. Not to mention that perlite is very porous and quite contam friendly.

Lowes has it. Even though its out of season. It should be in their outside gardening section (meaning the section that is outside). Thats where it is here. The brand they usually carry is "STA-GREEN" VERMICULITE. Its in a red and clear plastic bag.
