I think without prior knowledge, the clymer won't do you a ton of good.
I also bought a Clymer manual thinking it would be the be-all-and-end-all to teach me from the ground up, but really - its for someone who already has mechanical apptitude and understanding of basic motorcycle maintanence.
Goodluck, i reckon you'll need it.

I've torn down and built back up my honda civic (and i mean COMPLETLY rebuilt), but i had the help of mechanic friends, and that was half a decade ago.
The clymer has tons of pics and step-by-step tuitorials, so I feel like if I stick to it, i can at least get this thing back together.
Once it's together & running again I'll go about diagnosing & fixing the knock (which I think is a valve tick, and not a piston slap)

Assuming the crank is good you can probably do it for less than $500. ~$150 for piston/rings/gaskets/pin/bearing. $25 to take it to a machine shop and have it rebored .020in out. Other than that, you probably just have to adjust stuff (valves & carb) and you could get a cheap pipe and rejet to carb for a little more power.

4 strokes are super fun for trail riding and non-racing situations.
I think it's really dumb that they are making all the mx bikes 4 stroke though.
That's where 2 strokes shine.
I've got an a couple XRs myself and they are damn fun.

sounds like you never road an MX 4 stroke ill ride them over a 2cycle any day. they have power so you can do enduro + woods also higher top speed and the sheer power gives em pretty quick acceleration i had a xr 100 , yz 125, then yz 426F

Well of course they are better because they have twice the displacement, that's whats stupid about 4 strokes in mx.
I've rode a crf250 and it sucks compared to any 250 2-stroke, racing or trail, that I've ever ridden.

no shit... a crF250 is the same racing class as a 125 i would think a a 250 would own on something thats as fast as a 125.
i wouldnt touch a 250R 450 or bigger

nah its about the skill of the rider as i said if you know how to get on a 250 you can beat a 450. watch some MX on tv or SX. they really preform about the same but the 450 totally feels better in my opinion + maintenance is so much easier

Usually you have to hit the underside of the cylinder with a soft-faced hammer to loosen it up, it should slide off once you do that

Pretty much anything that is solid enough to give it a good hit, but not hard enough to dent/bend/gouge the metal. You could probably use a 2x4, or any kind of wood.

Yeah. I've got some shit draped around the rod to seal up that hole, and another rag around the cam chain tensioner. All of that has a undershirt draped over it.

Great work man. Turning wrench can be supremely frustrating but when everything comes together, the satisfaction is immense. I've been doing some sporadic work on a big sled motor recently. The winter before last, I was heading up the trail at about 90mph when she lost a bunch of power. Thought I fouled a plug at first (pretty common on those big 2 strokes). Then this horrible sound starts reverberating from the engine, though it keeps running. Lots of grinding, struggling. Shut it down, buddy tows me back to the truck. Pull the plugs and start peeking in the cylinders. #3 is full of shrapnel. Later inspection reveals the cylinder went bone-dry (fucking oil injection is retarded...premix from now on!). Crank bearing was the first thing to blow. Put all kinds of play in the stroke. Piston started smacking the head and shattering. Shattered pieces scored the fuck out of the cylinder. The bottom of the rod made a mess of the inside of the crankcase, and put a huge dent in the bottom of the crankcase on the outside.
All in all it's pretty ugly. I was hoping it was a something I could manage just with new parts, but some parts needed machine time. Still I learned a fuckload taking everything apart, and am looking forward to getting everything back together and getting my sled back to life. Luckily in this day and age there's a lot of resources for aspiring mechanics, plus a good friend is a straight up whiz can always help me through anything difficult.

Fuuuuck. So I just called the OEM parts distributor to try and get my cam chain tensioner ordered and tehy're on a nationwide backorder right now. Fuck.
I put in the order, now I just have to ope it shows up.

Damn dude nice job with the bike
I have a 2001 xr 200, last summer I busted it out for a ride after it barely being driven for the past few years. I was hauling ass down the road when it just loses all of its power and slowly goes to a stop I was about 4 miles away from home and my phone broke about 2 days earlier  walked it home and havent touched it yet haha. I'll probably tear into it this summer fix it up there were a lot of problems with it to begin with haha

btw, don4t sweat the cost too much. as i know you're fully aware, the experience here is invaluable. and besides, this completely rebuilt engine with nearly all brand new parts should last you a good while.

The problem a budding wrenching hobby (at least for me) is that you really start to see the utility of having a nice garage full of a wide array of tools, and the cost of building up a stash starts to mount. For me it started out as "yeah I'll save $ and learn some cool shit turning wrench" and now I have a growing stash of all sorts of relatively spendy specialty tools and shit that hardly get used. Fuck it though, it's worth it. Keep on truckin dude.

man, i can't even understand what you're saying anymore in this thread. too many technical terms for the mechanically handicapped such as myself. but it's good to hear you're still viewing it as a fun and worthwhile project, rather than having lost interest as many very well may have done by this point.
it's awesome that you started with little more than a broken bike, a manual and a desire to learn. i hope these last few speed bumps are minor ones for you, so you can get that baby back together and move in with your girl. good luck.

Thats some crazy looking damage to that housing. Looks like it must've been chewed up by rats or some other kind of rodent. As for closing up the holes you'll probably have to make yourself some kind of custom plastic pieces to cover/fill the holes and use some sort of epoxy designed for a plastic repair to bond them in place and seal it up good. With a little creativity you should be able to fix it up pretty nicely. Just search "plastic repair" to find all kinds of glues/epoxies designed for plastics. They make them for all types of applications. The trick will be finding some nice chunks of plastic to custom fit into or over the holes.

Been busy: instsalled the carbs, relaized htey weren't complete (some broken factors), decided to clean them, and am now tackling that project.
They're fucking complex.
