Verpa Bohemica
    #12357660 - 04/08/10 07:51 PM (14 years, 11 days ago)

So I went out today to check for morels and we found a shitload of verpa bohemicas. They were giving them out at my mushroom club last night too, so are these buggers edible for sure? Almost every site i look at when i search it on the web says use caution or dont eat at all. I doubt my club would give out poisonus mushrooms so should we go ahead and try these ?

Verpas are not poisonous, but many people believe that they are, for whatever reason. It's the gyromitra escuelentra that is poisonous, also known as the "false morel" (and "beefsteaks" by ignorant people in Michigan.) The stems on verpas are very chewy, but the cap has a great flavor, similar texture to morels.

I am not an expert though, so if you are really not sure, just wait for someone more educated than me to answer your question.:mushroom2:

Neat I've only found one of those in my lifetime. Didn't even eat it. It was in a crazy, super thorny, pile of sharp raspberry briars. I think I bled for days after getting out with one little half-free.

I know these are them for sure because i was given some last night at the mushroom club meeting. But I just wanted to see what others think and maybe get some ideas for how to cook them.

Mason seriously there were hundreds!!!We had a carzy rain storm last night so alot of them were knocked over . They were in a flood plain full of cottonwoods and some salmon berries i think.

MrsTrigger, we floured em and fried them with garlic and butter and they were quite tasty.  We only fried 5 or 6 to test them .

Anyone know if morels share this simliar habitat?

In my area, which is Northeastern Michigan, verpas grow in similar environments as morels, and around the same time of year. We usually find them around half-frees too.

They usually grow a couple weeks earlier than morels.

Black morels are currently growing out here, and we won't see verpas for another 3 weeks, which is standard for my area of Michigan. Blacks are the only morels out right now; greys and blondes come out later, with verpas.

Cool thats what I thought, although one of the old fellars in the club did have a few yellow morels already. I am prety sure I am on the right track habitat wise. Which is sweet because these kind of habitats are SUPER common here. I might be on a gold mine here peeps!

MrsTrigger, so blacks come out before verpas there? I dont have any good close fire sites so I may be missing out on the blacks.

All and all those mushrooms were quite tasty. Only mild stomach rumbles which could have been from something else i ate. no stomach aches or loss of muscular control like ive read. I will eat them again for sure.

Nice finds symon, make a roast (or some sort of juicy meat) in a pot in the oven, and halfway through put those in the juice. Just leave um till it's done. I kid you not. Frickin amazing.

I don't want to start an entire new tread on this, so I'm asking it here. I hope that's ok.

Am I correct to think that this is a Verpa bohemica?
It was growing on a field of grass near homes. Seen in April.

i would say it looks pretty damb close but i am no TI. thats why making your own threads is beneficial, i doubt any TI's will be looking in this thread now that its old. if you break the stem open it should be hollow with this wispy cotton like substance inside. the cap is attached at the top of the stipe unlike a true morel ,that would be attached to the stipe at the bottom of the pitted cap.

cool mushrooms though.

Yeah check the stem. Pretty sure that is Verpa bohemica though. Man the cap really looks morelly though, just with the shape of verpa. And the stem has that bumpy texture that I noticed on true morels but not verpas

Definitely check the inside of the stem.

Cutting them in half is a good habit to get into unless you don't mind eating bugs.  Verpas will be attached at the top of the stem.  Half-frees, that can look like them, are attached half way up the stem, hence the name, Half-free.  Verpas are edible with caution.  They can cause severe stomach cramps and loss of muscular coordination in some people.  I don't eat them.

This photograph was from a couple of years ago (again) so I can't check it out again.
