Agar ingredients?
    #1235341 - 01/21/03 03:55 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Can i use these ingredients to ,make this recipe?

Malt Extract Agar (MEA)
10 grams light malt extract
9 grams agar agar
500 ml potable or distilled water

The only trouble i see is the agar agar is in flake form but i think i can make it into powder quite easyerly, and the malt exract isnt light malt extract?does anyone know the difference?I have time to keep looking for the ingredients localy but found both these in the local health food store.
The peroxide is 17% h2o2 so if i need 2 drops for peroxidated agar does this mean I need 12 drops of this 17% ? my maths suck
Has anyone used these ingredients before?.

Thanks in advance

Where do you have the information that you need 2 drops? and of which peroxide concentration?

Wayne recommends 6-15 ml of the 3% peroxide per liter.

Told ya my math sucks lol i miss read it from here
http://www.theforestfloor.org/archives/drooldonkey_teks/peroxide.html

Now ive reread it it looks like more like 3.5 h2o2 drops to 496.5 h2o

Do you think the other ingreidents are ok to go with?

I was just thinking this would be a good recipe as most others i hope to get cultures from are using

Potato Dextrose (Yeast-extract) Agar (PD(Y)A)
broth from boiling 150 grams sliced potatoes
in 500ml water for 30 minutes(add water to 500ml)
(You can use 5 g of instant potato flakes instead)
9 g agar agar
7 grams dextrose( = glucose, or 10 ml honey or corn syrup )
1 gram brewers yeast or yeast-extract (optional)
i think
and i read its good to change mediums every now and then.

it is my understanding that the darker malts contain more carmelized sugars which would be inedible to the mycelia as well as harder to see through on a plate.

ok thanks for that i can find the light im sure.

Still got no clue on the peroxide amounts to add to 500ml
if the peroxide is 17% instead of 3% i really should have gone to school instead of shop lifting :frown: oh well ill wait for the g/f to get home

Agar flakes are fine to use. You do not have to grind them up. They will liquify just the same as powder.

Best of Luck. AWG

Ah sweet saves me getting out the pepper grinder  and there easyerly available.

Some decent person in chat that can use a calculator imforms me that
to make up that first recipe and get the peroxide levels anno mentioned
I would need to add 0.8823ml of 17% peroxide to 499.2 water.
Which is about 12 drops.
Can anyone variefy this

if i read annos statement correctly you should use 3-7.5ml to 500ml of agar formula(half liter) just fill up clean syringe with 3-7 cc's of peroxide and use that.

Ok, let?s do some math....

You want between 3-7.5 ml of 3% peroxide per 500 ml.
Let?s say 5 ml per 500 ml

Yours is 17%, so it?s 17/3=5.7 times as powerful, this means you need to use only 1/5.7 of the above amount = 5ml/5.7=0,88 ml which is a little less than 1 ml.

Are you sure it 17%??? That's corrosive I think.
At 3% it's a mouthwash
@10% it's an oxidizer
@70% it's explosive.
Sumthin' like that.

LOL cheers i was prety stoned and suck at math.
Whilst walking the dog i realized the i was thinking of puting to much in
and instead of 12 drops is far more like 1 drop but thanks a lot for doing my math for me anno  i appreciate it

Also it is 17% its called oxyplus and is useed for the cleaning of hydroponic systems between crops.

Now the next question lol your all gona hate me :P
Whats the diff between dextros sugar and normal white sugar beat sugar?

i also just read that the darker malt in syrup form is no good as as you said some of the sugar is caramelized this is said to promote genetic mutations.

Interessting

So back to the high street in the morning

dextrose is a simple sugar. Regular "table" sugar is a combination of more than one simple sugar. It is easier for mycelia to "eat" the simple sugars, but with a little bit of effort, they can also "eat" the complex sugars. This is, ofcourse, dependant on what you use as "table sugar". I don't know why you're stuck on drops. If you must have it in drops, though:
1 drop = 50 ul
1000 ul = 1mL
so
20 drops = 1mL
.88 mL = 16 drops

Couldnt find the light malt so the health food shops ordering me some so now im going to go with this

Potato Dextrose (Yeast-extract) Agar (PD(Y)A)
broth from boiling 150 grams sliced potatoes
in 500ml water for 30 minutes(add water to 500ml)
(You can use 5 g of instant potato flakes instead)
9 g agar agar
7 grams dextrose( = glucose, or 10 ml honey or corn syrup )
1 gram brewers yeast or yeast-extract (optional)

and use some local honey and home grow potatoes  instead
and make the next batch up when the shop gets in the light malt.

Thanks for all your help :-)
