How fine must the BRF be?
    #1234923 - 01/20/03 08:06 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

ok peeps dont have a coffee grinder right now so i am doin this the other way.. Blender.. How fine must my flour be? I tested this with white rice and i nothced that it gets pretty powdery but i can still see some very small rice particles.. Is this going to work or shoud i filter out the flour and just regrind the uncut rice?

Thanks

i don't neccesarily agree with getting it as fine as possible. neither does PF Tek or MMGG. i think the best bet is to get a good range from extremely fine to tiny grains about half the size of a millet seed. it seems to make a airier substrate to have larger particles in there. i think of it like feeding fish fry. you start really small and work up to larger food as the fish grow. the stuff grinds up unevenly anyway. I grind it until the sides start to get that fine flour on the sides and I can't see in there anymore. Looking in you will see an extremely fine flour all the way to little grains all in pretty even proportions. i am sure finer flour will work and work well. I have not performed conclusive experiments on this. I'm really relaying my personal preference and a few references I've picked up in my reading (I KNOW MMGG references the coarser granules being beneficial when discussing grinding your own rice)

I grinded my own BRF the first time I tried PF cause I couldn't get the flour and I mixed it up with some chunks almost whole and others a powder and I think that it hardly matters if at all. Unless you got a real bullshit strain when it comes to colonizing the mycelium will be happy it has a place to live and grow!

just grind it up whatever you get will work.

My very coarse home gorund BRF colonizes a bit quicker then the real fine stuff I get from the health food store.

what makes you so sure? I've had relatively uniform results with the exact same recipe across a wide range of strains.

It dont have to be that fine, but its said that the more fine the faster colonizing, BUT i would think that the more coarse the more air pockets there are for the mcycelium to get into. My personal statement is it doesnt really matter.
