Stopped by one of my patches to take a peek yesterday while taking the dogs for a walk, lo and behold--- a single, healthy cyan!!
This is my first springtime active find here in N. California. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my camera so I dont have any pics but I thought some of you guys would find it interesting.

I think spring cyans are more likely to fruit in areas with longer seasons like California and whatnot. Not as common in the Puget Sound maybe. I dunno though, just speculation.
Nice find either way, well I figure you didn't pick it or you could take a picture of it now, so you should get your cam and go back!

Alan said flat out that they don't fruit this time of year.
All the reading I've done says that they do, although rare.
Get some pics up.

Sorry guys, no pics. I ate it shortly after getting back to my house. I can assure you that it was indeed p. cyanescens. It was from a patch in the sand dunes that I have been taking care of for a couple years. This mushroom was the same as any other cyan that I've picked there.
I think that my local weather this winter has a lot to do with it. Its been a rather warm winter up until recentley, now its cold and rainy again like nov/dec. Its probably just a fluke, a cool one nonetheless

Sorry to dissapoint.. Next time I go to the beach I'll bring my camera just in case any more stragglers decide to pop up. If nothing else I'll get a habitat shot for you.
NoHum- this was in your area.

I know I am often perceived as the grumpy old man here, but seriously, what's the point of posting something as unusual as finding Psilocybe cyanescens fruiting in April and then not supporting it with a picture? I witnessed a UFO land and then the aliens smoked me out with some killer weed from Uranus. Sorry, no pics, all my cameras are broken. This is not even trying to imply that you aren't telling the truth, but without some sort of evidence the information in itself is basically worthless apart from us being able to say that we know a dude who once posted on a message board claiming that he actually found P. cynescens in April. You know how it is on the Internet:

What will a picture prove? I suppose it could be growing alongside some daffodils.

No. Actually a picture will prove a whole lot. I know my photoshop shit and I assume that maybe 99.98% of all people won't go to great length to try and forge a fake pic of them finding whatever mushroom. It's not like us folks have been on the Interwebs since yesterday. But simply saying "Whooohoo! I found something completely unusual!!" is, well... uhm... nice. And?

Was more wondering how you'd go about proving it wasn't taken in autumn.
May not be possible depending on the picture.

Well, I know that if I found something unusual like that I'd most likely put an issue of my local newspaper with the date visible right next to the find and then taking a picture. But maybe I am just anal like that and people are finding P. cyanescens in April all the time.

That's a good point actually, I hadn't considered that. I suppose the OP should do that if he wants to be believed when he takes his picture.

Wasn't there a thread a little while ago where someone said they found cyans then a little later posted the pic of the "cyan" and it wasn't even close lol
I think that's why everyone is so skeptical of your find

He wasn't trying to ask anyone if it was a cyan. he knew, he has picked and ate them before. if you have experience, and its YOUR spot where nescens grow; then i'm sure he would know if its a nescens or not. i think thats sick, especially in california.
