nope... sod cutter, a rotovator is a tiller, it'll leave a poor draining
hard pan under a soft top layer, the sod cutter removes the top couple of
inches of dirt and grass, the soil remains as it was, there's several
classes from an old style kick type sod cutter, the self propelled type
available at tool rental shops and then the big suckers you drag behind a tractor... after it's cut, it just rolls up

I have a Lawn care business. It looks like you have a little work ahead of you.
I'd clear the brush and dead trees. Mow that shit down and use some weed and feed.
Call around for lawn care service. You can get anybody to come and knock that tall shit down for you so you can get back to push mowing easy. Go with a smaller company, you'll get better rates. Just tell them you need a one time mow. I myself would charge between 60 or 70 for the one mow. If your in south/central Indiana by chance PM me I need the monies! You have a healthy yard just need to weed and feed and maybe spot plant some grass seed in the bare spots. Make sure to weed and feed after it's cut and let it get rained on. You'll see results in about a month. Keep up on that mowing! Don't let it get away from you again!

http://www.lowes.com/SearchCatalogDisplay?storeId=10151&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&N=0&newSearch=true&Ntt=weed+and+feed&x=37&y=4

Any of these products will work well for you.

First but not necessarily the most important question is...
What kind of lawn do you want when you are finished?

Things you should think about while deciding.
Amount of Prep work for Installation, maintenance time and cost, Size of area, changing ground levels, soil types, water requirements and cost per gallon. Potential need for + cost of... soil adjustments, chemical applications, re-seeding as well as grass, color, texture, season of active growth...
Time, prep-work, water consumption, uneven growth rates, and overall cost, will be highest if you try for a cool season grass like fescue.  In an age when conservation is a keyword, many people want to avoid them.
If color and texture of your areas native grasses are acceptable. They may be best suited for your conditions. IE. season length, soil types, rainfall, pest resistance.

Considering you have a pretty big area to prep and maintain,
"My first questions are..."
1. What is the overall cost and level of active maintenance you want to put into your lawn...
  a. this year?
  b. every year after?

2. Are you in a zone that allows for fast spreading, warm season, grasses like Bermuda?
It kind of looks like you might have some mixed in there already.

Going only on what I've seen in the video.
If it was my yard... I would start by.

1. Spraying round-up on anything that is green right now. Grass, broad leaf weeds, small trees and brush.
Reason. Kills early germinating weeds and cool season grasses, leaving dormant, warm season, grasses unaffected.
2. Mow everything close to the ground, without scalping the soil or remaining roots.
Reason. Easier to ID and treat new growth of unwanted weeds and grasses.
3. After 2-3 weeks use broad leaf herbicides as directed by label.
Reason. Kills late germinating broad leaf weeds.
4. Every couple weeks walk through with a handheld sprayer of Round-up and/or broad leaf herbicide shooting any cool season grasses, weed patches, brushy regrowth, and unwanted saplings, or old root volunteers.
5. When the warm season grasses start to come out of dormancy stop applying round-up.
6. Water as needed.
7. Fertilize as directed by product label.
8. Dead/thin spots will quickly fill in once the normal growing season starts. Large slow growing areas can be over-seeded with warm season seed mix or you can cut plugs from thick areas to transplant into bare or thin spots.

This will leave you with a lawn of mainly warm season grasses that will be more...
Drought tolerant, lowering watering cost and time.
Thicker growth that is Faster spreading, removing need to over-seed.
Weed and pest resistant, decreasing chemical applications. *1

*1. Since they green up later in the year, most weeds can be controlled with 1 early season application of round-up, before breaking dormancy.

This is bad advice. I'm sorry if I offend you Cricket.
Your steps above include;
1.Poison everything in the yard.
2.mow down any hopes of the grass surviving.
3.Apply more poison to the lawn.
4.Walk around every couple weeks and kill any survivors with poison.
5.No grass will ever have a chance of coming up in the warm weather because it has been ravaged to the roots with poison.
6.Water your mud patch.
7.Add fertilizer to your mud.

This advice will leave your yard barely able to grow grass for the next two seasons. That much herbicide will just kill every thing. Also his yard looked to me like it was running at a pretty steep grade, which will leech all that poison into the front yard and kill everything up there. It'll leave nice streaks of dead grass. Seen it done.
A simple weed and feed (cheaper than the above abuse) will suffice.

Again Cricket please don't take offense to this. It's just my two cents.
The rest of your presentation, above your steps of yard doom, was very well presented and well written.

First
I didn't say poison everything.
I said spray what is green, right now. That means only cool season grasses and broad leaf weeds that have germinated so far.
Lawn chemicals are always safe, if used safely. Reading and following a products label means the difference between the safe, effective use of a valuable tool, and the careless, waste of dangerous poisons.

Second.
"Short as possible w/o scalping" on hilly, uneven ground = 2-2.5 inches long. This is far from causing damage to dormant roots.
Mowing this short only removes uncomposted biomass that has been known to cause,
1. Inefficient water distribution,
A. decreased absorption rates by physically shielding soil from water as well as influencing both pooling and runoff.
B. Increased evaporation rates due to "wicking" action increasing with every inch of surface area exposed to air currents.

2. Higher rates of disease infection,
A. Un-composted plant material traps water like mulch but promotes fungal and bacterial growth that may harm existing grass and germination rates of any seed it infects.

3. Higher rates of infestation by damaging insect pests,
A. Standing plant material creates many micro climates suitable for all stages of many insects life cycles.

4. Increased need for, higher amounts and more frequent chemical applications,  ie. pests, weeds, and fert.
A. Like when watering, plant material will shield soil and small plants from herbicides drastically effecting any chemicals success rate.
B. Tall plant matter often deflects fertilizers from the most depleted soil or traps it in "Hot" areas that can burn plants.
More examples provided upon request.
Don't forget, The warm season grasses are still dormant and will not be harmed by mowing close to the ground.

Third and Fourth.
Re-read my statement above, pay extra attention to where it says, "as directed by label"

Properly educated, private consumers, and any legit lawn Co. SHOULD know that,
1. Most lawn chemicals require multiple applications, as well as the removal of excess plant material. This is often stated on label.

2. Every manufacturers label, clearly states.
A. they will not guarantee a products success unless the labels directions are followed.
B. violation of federal law to use product in any way, not described on the label.

3. Lawn chems. labels must cover info including but limited to, Controlling exposure, application rates, droplet size, special info for controlling leeching, spraying before/after rain, on hills, in wind, near flowering plants, or edible crops, near waterways, around bee's, etc. etc.

4.  Proper pest control starts with IDing your target pest, then treating as required. Simply put there is 4 categories of herbicide. Mono cot-grassy plants,  Di cot-broadleaved plants, Full spectrum-both plant types, and pre emigrants-ungerminated seeds. The warm season grasses are still dormant at this time and will not be harmed by round-up a broad spectrum spray, or many of the fast decaying mono cot sprays.  The Di cot-weed and feed you recommend will kill broadleaved weeds, leaving the grass unharmed. Sounds like what you want until you realize... it leaves you with a patchy, two tone, mix of warm and cool season grasses, causing areas of uneven color, texture, and competing growth rates, limited resources.

Keeping this in mind...Your statement that "This advice will leave your yard barely able to grow grass for the next two seasons. That much herbicide will just kill every thing. Also his yard looked to me like it was running at a pretty steep grade, which will leech all that poison into the front yard and kill everything"  Has been determined to be UN-TRUE.

You shouldn't need to destroy everything there just to have more grass installed.  Just buy a decent lawn mower and mow the yard whenever it starts to grow too tall.  If there's brush that's too tall for a mower now you can rake, weed-whack, machete, or do whatever else to help bring it down to size and then continue to mow.

Most of the advice given in this thread involves a lot of unnecessary work as well as expenses - all to get some grass?  There's already grass there that is probably quite hardy and won't need irrigation.  Personally I would be planting useful edible trees instead of worrying about useless and expensive grass lawns.

I guess it all depends on weather he wants to plant some grass or grow a lawn.
Believe it or not, there is a BIG difference between the two.

As you are talking about clearing your yard. You might be having some trees or plants over there. Do you even take care of them too? Because the outdoor plants get affected by the pest easily. If after watering properly, you notice that there are ants on your plants. Caterpillars have started eating your plants. You should also take better care of the plants and trees over there as well. One if suspect any signs of infestation they should ask for some professional help from Pest Control Monroe CT, Pest Control Newtown CT, Pest Control Redding CT, Pest Control Ridgefield CT as soon as possible. One can also look for some nearby them as well.
