Huge Shrooms for Newbies Tek
    #1233580 - 01/20/03 10:36 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I am writing up a tek and would like some feedback. This document is intended fo those with little to no knowledge of mushroom cultivation. My goal in writing this document is to provide a "one document" similiar to the pftek, but explaining a bulk grow. I believe it is possible to write such a document and am looking for some feedback.

----------------------HUGE SHROOMS FOR NEWBIES TEK----------------
-STEP BY STEP!!--------------------------------------------------------------------
---NO CONFUSING LINGO!!--------------Version 1.0----------*by f8L*-----
********************************** DISTRIBUTE FREELY ******************************

So, You are a Newbie. By now you have heard of the infamous pftek (www.fanaticus.com). For those of you who haven't, the pftek is considered the 'easier' technique for newbie's looking to grow shrooms. Unfortunately, it is often laborous, confusing, and simply produces small ass shrooms. If you have lots of time to kill, go for it. If you are looking for a way to grow EXPONENTIALLY more shrooms-- LET'S GET STARTED!

How much is this going to Cost?
Under $100 bucks.

How long is it going to take
1 1/2 months or less

Available @Walmart
- 2 rubbermade tubs ($4 bucks each)
- 2 bags of Perrington's Birdseed ($10 bucks each)
You are looking for the birdseed that does not have sunflower seeds and lists
white millet, red millet, and canary oats as its primary ingredients
- 1 box of medical latex gloves ($3.99)
- 1 face mask (hardware department) ($1.99)
- 1 roll electrical tape (its black) ($1.99)
- 1 roll of aluminum foil ($1.99)
- 1 bag of polyfill (arts and crafts department, white cottony stuff used inside pillows - $4)
- 1 Pressure Cooker (big one you need sells for $40 and can hold at least 2 quart jars inside)

Available @Albertsons Or Safeway (supermarket type)

Available ONLINE
- At Least 2 spore syringes - Psilocybin Cubensis - (www.thelittleguy.com) - $20

Summary of Steps 1-10: The enemy of any mushroom cultivation is bacteria. In order to eliminate bacteria, we are creating a bacteria free environment inside a quart jar.

1) For this tek we are working with 6 jars.

Get a hammer and nail or drill and put an eraser sized hole in the middle of the lids. Fill this hole with the polyfill. This will allow air exchange and the polyfill prevents harmful bacteria from entering. Put another hole on the inner rim, about 1/4" from the edge, this is where you inject the spores into the jar. Put a piece of electrical tape over the inner rim you have just created. For this experiment we use 6, but you can use more if you choose.

2) Fill a pot with the Penningtons Birdseed. Add water to the birdseed so it covers most of it. Put on medium and simmer for no more than 20 minutes. You want the birdseed to soak up most of the water.

3) Fill the quart jar 2/3 with the birdseed and tighten lid. Cover completely with tinfoil. Now put as many quart jars as can fit into your pressure cooker.

4) Pressure cookers vary so read instruction manual. Generally, you put your stove on high for 15 minutes until the top of cooker starts rattling. Now put to Medium for 50 minutes. Make sure you fill the bottom 1" of the cooker with water!

5) After the pressure cooker has finished, there's no need to open it. Let it cool for 4-5 hours or until the jars are no longer warm to the touch. If the jars are still warm and you inject the spores, the spores might die.

6) After cooled, take off the tinfoil. What you just did was create a very sterile environment inside the jar, so DO NO oen the jar for ANY REASON. YOU WILL CONTAMINATE IT if you open it. Now you need to create a sterile environment for
injecting the spores.

Turn on your oven to 450 degrees and pull out a tray. The oven kills bacteria in the air, so you will be working on the tray. Also, turn off your air conditioner and put on a new clean shirt and face mask. There should be no air flow in the room.

7) Shake up your spore syringe for a minute. Now, the idea is to inject 1.5 cc's of spore solution into the outer hole n your jar and QUICKLY QUICKLY QUICKLY put a piece of electrical tape over the hole as you pull out the syringe. Remember, you should be doing this in front of your oven, with mask on and gloves on!

8) Now all your jars are innoculated. We now need to create an 80-83 degree environment to store the jars for approx. 15 days while the mycellium (the white poofy stuff) colonizes the jars. Take one of your rubbermade bins, and fill up
with 1/3 water. Put the subersable water heater inside and then put your other rubbermade container in the water. Put you jars inside. Once the water heats up, the internal temperature should be 80 or so degrees. You want NO light, so put
on the lid. It's okay to look at the jars and expose to light, but don't make it a habbit.

9) You will notice after 4 days that white mycellium is forming. ONLY NOW do you shake the jar to distribute the mycellium throughout the jar. The jar should be completely covered in white mycellium in around 15 days. If parts are still
uncolonized than its not ready. If any of the jars are a grey, black, brown, or any other weird color its cONTAIMINATED and you need to throw it away.

10) After all your jars have colonized, proceed to STAGE 2.

Summary of Steps 11-20: We are setting up the proper environment for the mycellium network to develop into nice big mushrooms. In order to do this, we are "casing" - meaning crumbling our mycellium into straw and manure inside our
rubbermade. Once again, bacteria is our enemy- so we first pasturize (heat up the straw/manure) to kill the harmful bacteria. Notice that we don't want the temperature to heat up past 180 degrees or for longer than 1 hour 20 minutes,
or we risk killing the good bacteria that helps the shrooms grow.

After your jars are colonized, we are going to "case" them. This requires you get more materials.

- 2 bricks of cut up straw (Available at Michaels or other Arts and Crafts supply stores) - $10
- Organic Poo (Available at Lowes or Home Depot - Any brand is fine) $6

11) If you want to stink up your house, you can do this on a stove, otherwise get a garbage can. You want to have twice as much straw as you do manure.
Put the manure and straw into the garbage can. You are going to need to boil a lot of water and fill the garbage can till the manure/straw is covered. What you are doing is called "pasturizing." You are making sure there is no harmful bacteria in the straw or manure that so it does not contaminate our mycellium. Maintain a 160 degree to 180 degree temperature for 1 hour 20 minutes. If you don't have a temperature gauge, simply by adding more boiling water every 20 minutes
you should maintain the temperature.

12) Make sure your manure and straw is cooled and mixed, and then apply a 1 inch layer into the bottom of one your rubbermade container. Now open one of your quart jars and apply a inch layer of mycellium. (The mycellium in the jars have formed a strong network and is relatively contaminant resistant, so you want to still wear gloves when handling mycellium, but you don't need to worry as much about sterility.)

Now add another layer of straw/poo and then another layer of mycellium. Continue for 3 to 4 layers which should be about 3 of your quart jars. If you have 6 quart jars of mycellium, use 2 rubbermade's. After you have finished, apply a layer of saran wrap over the top of the 4 layers and "tuck under" as if you were tucking in a bed. You are doing this to insulate the heat. Poke holes into the saran wrap to allow for some air exchange. You want to PUSH REALLY HARD to make
the straw/poo as compact as possible. Put the lid on the rubbermade and prepare to wait till it colonizes.

13) After two weeks, your straw/poo mixture should be colonized. This means its covered in the white mycellium and is ready to be cased! If you see black or brown or ugly green mildow, you have been contaminated. You can try cutting this section out, but you are probably going to lose the battle.

Sounds like a good tek man! Can you really get organic poo at Lowe's?? I'm suprised I haven't even called them to ask!!

I got this compost/manure mixture, the compost is made of dead leave, grass clippings and other forrest products, and is 90% compost, 10% manure! I dunno if this will work!

Do you think it will?
