I've been playing for about 3 years (will be on my birthday in 8 days) I mostly play prog/death metal but will branch out into classical, jazz, and other genres occasionally.. I practice several hours a day not only to catch up to other players my age (I'm only 19 so its not a huge gap), but so that one day I may be able to make a living off of the art I'd say for the time I've played I'm quite technically proficient but my lack definitely shows in my improv (occasionally make up some incredible shit, but for the most part - meh) and my music theory (which likely is part of the cause of my poor improv) Music Theory generally bores me and I have considered simply not learning it and training my ear vigorously instead, however I'm making efforts to become more learned in the ways of the theorist, it can only benefit my playing
I've played around a half-dozen gigs at small venues, I really wasn't completely ready for the experience... wasn't quite comfortable with my playing, but managed to muscle through our songs and sound somewhat-ish decent Now I would feel much more comfortable, but still would prefer not to be sober

I got a cheap little children's acoustic for Christmas when I was like 8-9. I didn't get serious about playing until I was around 12-13 and was hardcore about it until I was around 15-16, when I got playing bass. I currently have an acoustic I got from an outlet store for cheap (I don't know what brand), a Jackson electric, a Fender Mustang (my baby), and the bass that I learned on.
I was mostly into blues, blues-rock, old school punk and grungy distorted stuff. I was also HEAVY into American Gypsy guitar music, I can best describe it as a mix of fast Django-type Gypsy jazz rhythms, flamenco, with Greek mandolin type picking & Russian type sound progressions. It's hard to describe as anything but 'crazy' but it's REALLY fun & challenging to play.
It depends on the type of music I'm playing whether or not I use a pick but if I do they're usually thick ones. I wasn't really disciplined in my learning the guitar, starting with the 12-bar blues and learning chords from one of those posters, after that mostly just playing by ear.
I'm 18 now and want to get back into it soon with a more serious attitude of musical study than just messing around for fun, focusing mainly on learning flamenco.

sometimes fusing won't work as you expect, other times it is mind blowing indeed for all listeners&players
when i first started playing on an old black fender acoustic in '95 i was like whoa!, this is what i wanna do in my life, it was so thrilling and i felt like getting closer to my rock stars
workwise though, i followed a different path in life, without letting go of playing at every chance i got
if you are indeed serious about making a living out of this business and making it your career, start working on it heavily firstly by getting someone more experienced in music playing, to play with. he may not suit your style exactly but that's the fun part of it, by jamming you fuse each other styles and produce mad tunes!
i don't know your level of knowledge on the instrument, i strongly recommend you
a)go through all the Major / Minor chords for starters, and feel comfortable changing randomly between them b)broaden your pentatonic scale by blending other scales into it, there are many programs on the net that do just that - play chords you can solo on in such a way you will see the overriding scales, jam on!
c)if you cant find a mate to play with to solo, just put your favorite Rory, or Jimi cd and try to solo with them, alternatively try http://www.guitarscalesmethod.com/
i found it very useful, especially after you feel comfortable with the major/minor and 7th/9th/13th chords
Oh thanks I'm gonna have a look at that website! I've started to be more serious about guitar a couple of months ago. So I'm only starting to learn the theory. I'm planning on taking guitar and keyboard classes when summer ends (blame it on the money).

How do you rate Rory?
I know the 80's weren't good to him but fucking hell could he play.
Well I don't know any theory or anything like that, always used tab and just playing by ear.
Blues stuff is very easy to pick up off listening to cd's and songs.
I do need to learn more chords and scales though as things can get stagnant at times...

I can't play scales fast. At all.
I can play blues but if I played the blues scale, that's all it sounds like. Very mechanical sounding.

I've always been kinda terrible at sticking to scales... I play whats in my head, and it often sounds worlds better and more original... the only problem being I don't know the fretboard to the point where I can make the noise I want when I want everytime,
with time I suppose...

I play guitar.

Sometimes I use a pick, but I enjoy finger-picking better.
If I use a pick, it's size/thickness depends on what kind of music I'm playing--for solos, I prefer super-thin picks, but for chords/riffs, I prefer medium picks.

No, but that's my fault because I don't practice all too often these days, I don't even own a guitar ATM. I'm

I've played in front of a few people (both sober and high), and it's not much different than playing alone, it's actually more fun in some ways.

Blues is really fun, but it sort of gets repetitive and boring after a while IME. I'd like to learn more, though, and also learn a little jazz as well.

Yeah I still need a lot more practice myself, but everybody who hears me play says I'm great, and they don't even notice any of my mistakes.
I've been playing since I was about 14-15, on and off, and I'm 21 right now.

Jimtown, it's a shame that we can't hang out and jam sometime. I have a feeling that we would compliment each other well. I excel in some areas and am weak in others and I think we would have a blast just kicking it with a couple guitars and a pint of your favorite.
I took the time to plug in the electric guitar today and hook up a microphone to the PA system and played a song I've been wanting to play for a long time. I printed out the lyrics and let 'er rip. It's a simple song (chord wise) and kind of corny but I love the way the lyrics roll. The cadence and phrasing is cool to me.
Check out this video and tell me what you think.

The only way you're gonna break out of that is by writing your own songs/riffs. You need some of your own context to view the guitar from. As longs as the notes on the guitar are categorized in your brain as "on a scale" then it's only natural that it'll sound like you're playing scales.

I really appreciate this advice. I have scores of original songs but I think I have the 'need to be shown kind of brain'. I can watch someone do something and with a little time and effort and a couple of 'show me agains please'; I can do it. I don't mean shredding or anything like that. But I learn quick from seeing. Still, this is good advice.

I have been playing guitar for probably 7 years now and what has helped me progress the most is jamming with other people who are really good at guitar. I play blues, metal, and some classic rock type stuff but mostly blues. Older guys who have been at it for awhile or just dudes I know that are naturally talented have helped me progress alot over the past 2 years.
Another thing that has helped me out ten fold is trying to learn songs by ear. After you learn one song or just your favorite licks out of the song things become much easier because you can hear the note in your head and your instantly able to play that without thinking.

learning songs by ear is really important.
To get really good you have to be very practiced at creating melodies on guitar, and that's not going to happen if your ear isn't very well trained. That's the reason great guitarists write such simple riffs that sound so badass...their melodic control over the instrument is so perfected that even the simplest riffs are filled to the brim with energy and emotion.

I tutored Hendrix, Page, Malsteem, Van Halen...They just couldn't take my tips
They just couldn't keep up I guess, I tried to clean up their act they just wouldn't listen, I guess I still rein supreme
I would post a video/audio, but my shredding always melts the equipment.
