There really isnt unfortunately. I dont like using paypal either, the best alternative is craigslist.
I did recently by something off of ebay and the seller had me go though -> http://www.moneybookers.com/app/ . I was happy to see something other than paypal. Check it out, and tell us what you think.

Alertpay is great, but I don't know if you can use it on ebay.

If you use a verified account with a confirmed address, and adhere to PayPal's Buyer and Seller Protection policies (and aren't buying/selling legally questionable items), you are not likely to lose your money using PayPal.
For example, I run a retail website that has processed hundreds of thousands of dollars through PayPal and have only once lost money. That one time was because as the seller, I shipped to a non-confirmed address and didn't require a signature upon delivery. Either of those two violations would result in lost protection under the Seller Protection policy if the buyer contested the validity of the transaction. I learned my lesson and haven't lost anything since.
Likewise, the old Shroomery PayPal account was used for several years without incident. Though we did ultimately get shut down for violating PayPal's terms of use due to the subject matter of our site, they still allowed us to withdraw all remaining funds in the account after a holding period (few months).
