does anyone know what those aquarium oxigenating tablets are made of/ how they work.
the tought was could they be used to increase disolved oxygen in honey water? or do they steralise at the same time?

Uhhhh......I dunno........

Not the type of thing many people would have tried.  My guess is it wont do much one way or the other...

Could these be used add oxygen to a terarium? Like drop it in the jar with the fish tank heater twice a day?

That would be cool

Interesting idea!  It's nice to see some fresh ideas.  Creative thought will definately make this hobby more interesting and rewarding!

I would like to hear of any results if someone attempts to use these in a terrarium to increase oxygen levels.

Peace,

Now that I think about it a little, you could even place the tabs in wet perlite, which would probably make the oxygen more availible to release in the air...

How about using O2 cylinders???

you can get oxygen in tanks right? why not hook it up with a slow release valve?

hell, you could grow underground with this!!hahahahaha

I think it would kill the mycelium.Oxygen is pretty corrosive. Here's what i do to pump up the oxygen.Take a aquarium pump and seal it in a baby wipes container.Attach a couple of micron magic filters to the opening and seal it off good.Punch a hole in the side for the tubing to attach.Sterilize a aquarium stone with 91% alcohol(red label)and put it in your honey water. With the lid on the jar loosely run her wide open.Works for me every time.

I remember seeing a pic at fanaticus of shrooms grown with a pure o2 tank. the stems were extremely long and many fruits appeared on each cake.

Give this a try;

Boil your media water for 10 min to degas. Allow to cool to warm and add some hydrogen peroxide (h2o2) then honey. Pre heat canner to just boiling then place media containers inside. PC as usual and allow to cool slowly. Regulate the heat down incrementally. Under pressure the peroxide will degrade and oxygen will saturate the liquid.

Results may vary. Household peroxide is marked at 3% or 10 Volume, meaning each volume of liquid holds the equivalent of 10 volumes of free oxygen. Peroxide is packaged at 3-1/2% with an expiration date of approximate degradation to 2-1/2%. Stabilizers are also used with the most common being phosphoric acid.

Note: A pressure canner will do this well. Rattle weight cookers also work some what. Steam or boiling to sterilize lets oxygen gas escape the liquid as will just putting containers into a cold canner and bringing up to steam.

Peace.

Actually folks, there is no indication that increased oxygen is desired or beneficial in any way. Shrooms are affected much more by co2 levels than oxygen. As long as the co2 is vented out with normal atmospheric air, there will be plenty of o2. I would be suspect of any benefits of added oxygen until a true scientific experiment proves otherwise, but I'm sure the real scientists have already played with the idea. The fact that no major papers have been referenced in the litereature leads me to believe there is no practical benefit.

The only exception to this is that the peroxide in peroxidated substrates does produce oxygen which counters the wetness (and therefore anaerobic risk) caused by the added peroxide. A properly prepared substrate shouldn't be overly wet, and a proper fruiting system should just replace the co2 laden air with fresh air.

Does anybody even have any theoretical basis for wanting to add oxygen to any phase of cultivation?

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Greetings all,

Tank's original question dealt with liquid culture. O2 is needed for mycelial metabolism particularly in utilizing available nitrogen. Native soil O2 levels are near atmospheric (19% or less), however (as I recall) water reaches O2 saturation at 6% or less at fermentation temps needed.

In still liquid culture available O2 is quickly depleted and an adequate surface area is needed to allow sufficient transpiration. For spore/mycelial mass propagation an occasional shake is all that's needed to replenish oxygen. For production of fungal metabolites considerably more O2 and CO2 are needed, as well as nutrients not provided in basic liquid teks.

See:

for a start.

That is an interesting article, good find comet. I guess if for some reason one was unable to shake their jars, then additional oxygen could be helpful. Or if one were going the (impractical for home cultivator) route of liquid production of psilocybin. But I don't think Oxygen would help outside of liquid culture.

Mycofile,

I liquid culture seed stock of higher and lower fungi in sealed half pint booze bottles with serum plugs in the caps. No prob shaking these. 100cc per and shake laterally till frothy several times per day. Grow out a few days and fridge for later use. Makes the best beer yeast.

Home liquid culture is possible depending experience of the hobbyist, but as you say impractical. That may change tho.

Debianlinux !! That didn't hurt at all

Peace.
