yet another aquarium heater question!
    #1230945 - 01/19/03 09:42 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I know most people recommend 100watt aquarium heaters for their incubators, but i came across a free brand new 200 watt one today.

My question is would it be accpetable or is 200 watts just overkill? I saved myself 40 bucks, since a brand new 100 watt one goes for around 40 bucks with tax (cdn) around here. So saving money is always cool....

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Depends on the size of your incubator.
I have used several sizes of submersible aquarium heaters.
There is no need to go over a 200 watt aquarium heater unless you are using an incubator that is the size of a 75 gallon aquarium tank.

One more question,

This is the heater I got, still in the packaging, fer free
http://www.hagen.com/uk/aquatic/product.cfm?CAT=1&SUBCAT=110&PROD_ID=01007160031001
On the site, and the packaging it says completely submersible

But, right at the top where the glass joins the plastic there is a lilttle blue line called 'the water line' and it says do not immerse beyond water line.
So wtf? is it completely submersible or not?

If it isnt could I get away with putting some sort of sheath around the top part and like zip-tying it in place so it was water proof?

Or could i get away with something like this
http://www.theomc.com/index.cfm?fuseAction=teks.mmIncubator

thnx in advance.

if you doubt for a second that it's compleatly submersible, then PLEASE do NOT put it under water. 110 volts hurts like a muther fucker and can kill you.

well i dont know what the hell to do then... how can they advertise it as completely submersible on their web page and the packaging if it has a water line? I dont get it, bah maybe ill try it out, but ill make sure to unplug the fucker anytime i need to get near it.

ps i been electrocuted by 110, its not that baaaaaad. Never had the pleasure through water, but im sure it would be just great. *sarcasm*

that EZ Incubator looks grate, i think it would work even if your heater isn't submersible . just make sure the seal is water tight, and that it doesn't get bumped or jarred around to much .
im gonna try it . good luck

one other thing the web page says that heater is 220v is your's ? 110v would have a different plug . don't try to convert it, 'cause it would burnout in a hurry .

well I thought if anyone had this some inquiry about their water heater, Id post what hagen wrote to me.

Looks like the Im the only one posting on this thread though. heh

Dear Mr. xxxx;
Thank you for supporting our aquatic products.

All aquarium heaters sold in Canada must have the water line your note refers to. Internationally, the Thermal Compact is accepted as an air tight device that is fully submersible.

Best regards,

Heh, yes 110v may hurt. However volts will not kill you. I've been shocked by 20000 volts before. No biggie. Stunguns usually run anywhere from 75000-600000 volts. However what gives these products their stopping power, and what kills somebody who is electricuted is the current, which is measured in amps. One amp can kill you very easily. You could get shocked by a million volts, but if the current is low, you won't die.......anyway, sorry off topic.

you are correct, there's usually 30 Amps comming out of your wall (I think)

well, if we're gonna be all nitpicky then I'd have to say that 30 amps is not coming out of your wall. 30 amps are available. anything else on the circuit will detract from that total. a circuit only draws the amperage it "needs" (based on it's resistance and the voltage applied). pick pick pick

15 amps is the standard for bedrooms and the bathroom and kithen will be on 30 amp fuses. All you gotta do is open the fuse box and look at the fuse ratings and locations.

I RETURNED my brand new 200 watt sub heater just now. I could not get that two bin system to give me a dependable OVERALL balance in incubation temp. Then, I read a post of a guy who is doing fine with a closet and a 150 watt bulb! I have an enclosed bin, and a small thermostatically controlled heater. I have found it does a better job in holding the correct ambient incubation temp. Glad to get my $40.00 back!. The heater cost me $6.00 at a thrift store. Lo-tech is sometimes better than 'hi'-tec.
