Couldn't it also be rust from the metal lid?

Judging from the nature of the post I'd assume this was a first grow. unless he was using old lids with rust already on them the chances of rust acumulating on the lid enough to discolor the substrate are pretty slim unless he's been waiting for them to colonize for months now.

      Could be lipstick mold.

Steaming your jars for the PF TEK should work fine. I've never had any problems with it. You should look at what you do after the steaming to find what your problem with contams is.
If the contams are appearing first at the innoculation points most likely it's your innoculation proceedure to blame. Just be super clean and make sure you heat your syringe point red hot between each injection in the jar and then swipe it with an alchohol soaked cloth to cool and further sterilize it.
Also you might want to look at the area you have your jars sitting to colonize. Maybe you need to bomb it with lysol to make sure nothing's living there.

Hang in there you'll get the hang of it and be enjoying the fruits of your labor in no time

true. i guess ill try better sterilization. i did lyscol the incubator. i had the caps just a smidgen loose for air exhange after 2 jars developed black mold i capped them all up tight and got rid of the infected jars. and now this redish stuff comes along. who knows. man. i hope at least one jar makes it to birthing.

Look carefully for small cracks in the glass, when i first tried making cakes some of my jars cracked almost an unnoticable amount but enough to get contams in, let them cool in the water, takes a night to do but they will turn out better in the long run.
