You inspired me. I read your post when it first came out and gave it a shot. Instead of soaking in bleach water I pasteurized. One I soaked in plain h2o and one with coffee and gypsum. The one with just water took a long time to colonize the ones with coffee soak have colonized quicker. I have them in fruiting conditions now. One cardboard block has reishi and the other has king oysters. I have three others with oysters as well. Thanks for the ideas and inspiration. myc

I get really good results with just sawdust and shredded straw. 10% spawn rate (wheat grain)
Sawdust only

They are in my high humidity GH but they will lose weight quick if he humidity goes below 90%. I know my blocks aren't the normal way but this is how I like to do Reishi, all other mushrooms stay in the bag but Reisi has a thick "skin" and does good without. Good luck on your blocks Meph.

These have been outside for a while now, I forgot to take harvest pictures but the one with no bran was better. I ended up with a full+ gallon ziplock bag of dry Reishi form just those two blocks so they did well. CH

couple more questions that I though of for you CH.
Whats a good ratio for spawning?
Is there a minimum size that I should go for? I only have one jar that has about 650ml of colonised rye in it. Should I g2g that to more jars?
Also, is corrugated cardboards better than cardboards from say cereal boxes?

Whats a good ratio for spawning? Anywhere between 1:1- 1:10, Reishi is a fast growing fungi so higher ratios are alright but stay under 1:5 for the first few grow to know how well/fast your culture is.
Is there a minimum size that I should go for? No minimum but I wouldn't bother with less than a couple quarts spawn/sub combined.
I only have one jar that has about 650ml of colonised rye in it. Should I g2g that to more jars? I would defiantly do some g2g, you can always store a couple colonized jars if you don't use them all but when you only have one then it is time for g2g.
Also, is corrugated cardboards better than cardboards from say cereal boxes? Most cereal boxes have a glossy coating on them and isn't recommended, so yes corrugated cardboard boxes, egg cartons or most non-shinny cardboard works well the less ink and glue the better.

Thanks for that CH. This is a very fast culture. I put a wedge, a big wedge, maybe a square cm. I was out of town for ten days got bat to it fully colonised with no shake or anything. Its from SW come to think of it. Its trying to eat the jar. Has reached almost a inch up. I need to do something with it, Going to be a chore to get it out of the jar. Might have to take it outside to the bike tire and
Oh and is just soaking in soapy water enough or should i pasturise?

Base Icks if you are talking about cardboard and just soaking in soapy water don't do it. For Cardboard I soak in 10% bleach water then rinse with fresh water and sterilize. CH

So should I measure out my cardboard dry for the volume to spawn to?
I'm thinking that I could measure it out dry to find the volume of it.
Should I soak it over night in bleach, then rinse the next day and drain, and then put in bags to sterilize?
Then when they are cool, pour the grain in the bags and viola!?
Thanks

Also, can I just use cardboard? I have some beech chips, but I rather not use them yet but I can. Guess I can always experiment. Would love if just cardboard would do well, since that shits freeeee.
Oh and last thing, gypsum percentage?

Sorry it took so long BaseIcks, I haven't been on in a few days. The best results that I have had with Reishi is from mostly cardboard. Adding some verm/coffee to it would be good but cardboard works fine just make sure it is NOT too wet. I moved recently and have been using the boxes from the move to grow Reishi so it will definitely work. CH
Thanks, Fract! I haven't been feeling well that is why I have not been on much lately, I don't know if I told you that in pm or what but I normally don't post it.

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm glad I waited becuase I was going to go with field capacity on the cardboard. I think I'm going to give it all a good squeeze till nothing comes out should be fine. I need to get a laundry bag to hang then and let em drip.
I hope you get better soon man.
Maybe those reishis are coming in handy?
