you can catually incorperate your casing layer into the cake when you first make it. Just add a small layer of vermiculite on the bottom of the jar before you add any substrate. It also helps absorb some of the water that may form on the bottom of the jars that sometimes stalls colonization

When you birt the cakes there will already be a layer of vermiculite that you can add moisture to when needed. It also helps absorb some of the water that may form on the bottom of the jars douring colinization.
