7 Air Force airmen discharged for spice use March 27, 2010 - sltrib.com
Seven airmen at Utah's Hill Air Force Base have been discharged for using spice, an incense that has effects similar to marijuana.
Base officers say cases against 11 other airmen accused of using spice are being processed, and a discharge likely will prevent the airmen from joining the military again.
While spice is legally sold in smoke shops, U.S. military members are forbidden from using it because it alters one's mental state when smoked.
Base officers say a similar ban also is in the works for civilian employees of the base.
They say the seven airmen received general or less-than-honorable discharges, which signify some wrongdoing has occurred, but not at a criminal level.
A dishonorable discharge is equivalent to a felony conviction in the U.S. legal system.

Ouch... Sucks getting fired... From a career bid. A friend of a friend Victoria has a son who is going off to train to be a pilot.
I guess they might start flying commercial planes in a year or two...

cigarettes and nicotine are okay though, they don't "alter your mental state"
they should ban flowers, hugs, and puppies while they are at it. All are dangerous substances that can alter a pilot's mental state.
Jeez, you'd think they were caught smoking it in the cockpit.

And now I wonder why all military men have drinking problem... It is the only drug they can get their hands on. Oh and all addicted to nicotine too. Bah, that is from my two friends that are in the army. I should not generalize like this. But it seems from what I heard that they all drink like crazy when they can so... anyway.
This is stupid.

If I was in the Military, I've thought about the Navy, only way I'd even think about it, and that's only because it would pay for Med. School, would be to have JWH on hand at all times, due to the strict no herb policy, but I wouldn't get caught and wouldn't share my shit, I would take a couple mg's with some coffee in the morning and then when I get off maybe take a hit or two, which doesn't smell at all, that's why these fuckers should have just kept there mouths shut and not bought "Spice" in the first place, just get JWH-018 and if you can, some JWH-073 to mix, closest thing I've felt to weed when it comes to synthetic Cannabinoids.
But I do agree with you guys saying, "no wonder there is such an alcohol problem in the military, plus these guys are drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes like crazy, and obviously need to let off some steam at the end of the day, what better way then to smoke a natural substance that does not cause much of a hangover, more of an "I'm still a little high possibly", but that's if you get really blazed. Why can't they smoke a joint after they're done there shift, why? I just don't get it. The Aspirin they get from the medic is 100x more dangerous than the weed that they wont let them smoke. Damn, I'm angry!

aspirin is more physically dangerous but it has no psychoactive effect, thats why pilots can take it, i can see why they dont want pilots using drugs but the fact that they dont consider alcohol to be a drug like all the others is ridiculous

They do consider alcohol a drug. STRICT time limits are in effect about drinking then flying.

Don't they give military pilots amphetamines for running long flight missions?
But you can't use anything even resembling pot, even if it isn't illegal?

Amps are (supposed to be) used under strict controls, with monitoring, under physician supervision.
Lots of drugs are legal- any hospital stocks cocaine, and if you break your nose you might get some. With a prescription.

However pilots under its influence still manage to be involved in friendly fire incidents.
You would think any legal way of winding down would be somewhat acceptable.

im in the army and let me tell you its fucking oppressive. before i joined i didnt really drink all that much but now im pretty much an alcoholic. we live in cramped living conditions with no privacy and all i think about all day is how i wish i could smoke weed. because really this place wouldnt be that bad if i knew i could smoke a joint when im done with the 14 hours of work i do each day and just relax. i have to drink like 5 cups of coffee a day just to keep me going because i dont get alot of sleep and i get up at 4 in the morning. i have no time to pursue hobbies and its starting to drive me crazy... the army is no place for a former hippy like myself. oh well, only 3 more years to go!

Just to clear things up, an Airman is your basic enlistee, the Air Force's private rank if you will. Its the officers who fly the planes while the airmen maintain them.
Also, this sounds right up the Air Force's alley, as when I was in I fell under a program called PRP (personnel responsibility program) that disallowed any sort of energy supplement, ginseng, etc.(although you could still drink alcohol and/or smoke cigarettes) and I was just a mechanic.
