ANY DEADLY LAWN MUSHROOMS LOOK LIKE PANN SUBB?
    #1228737 - 01/18/03 11:53 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

So all summer long I have these mushrooms that grow on many lawns around here, from what I can tell they look Identical to PANN. SUBBS.
Average 3-5 inches high, light stems, dark ring around cap, round semi conical cap when young. Never a spore print but the gills are black, or verry dark from what I can tell...
What I want to know, is there any DEADLY lawn mushrooms that match this profile or any that are PANN SUBB look alikes?

Really need a print to be sure... From what your describing those grow here in the yards as well... Most have brown prints here and I'm asuming our poinious. However I have found others that look very much alike that bruise pink and have jet black prints- I never eat them, but from what I read they (bruise pink/jet black spores) MIGHT be a type of subb. (just aint got the balls to eat them yet)

Pan sub. do grow on lawns/frsh layed sod w/ poo fert. on them right?
And my area of ontario is, the 2nd warmest place in canada, (1st being BC)...
So I'm wondering if I may have an abundance of pann subbs...I just can't wait till spring.
I spent 3 hours at Chapters, reading all kinds of ID books, and found one specifically for ontario, with AWSOME pictures, great details and such...
Also find many Conocybes growing.VERRY tall thin with cinamon - brown spore print, conical cap, don't bruise blue.

Gill color is unfortunately not always the same as the spores. Make sure you get a spore print. The ones you obviously want to eliminate as a possibility are the Galerinas, in most guides in North America you'd want to look up Galerina autumnalis. Be aware that this species has been merged recently with a couple similar ones which might or might not have a ring and the cap can be anywhere from moist to sticky to slimy (which might differ somewhat from what many guides say). The deadly Galerinas have brownish spore prints, not black or purplish, so a spore print is the easiest way to distinguish with certainty.

It sounds like you have an idea of what you're about, so you probably already know to avoid the Conocybes. There are members of that genus which have the same toxins as the deadly Amanitas.

If you could post a picture or three that would be helpful, too.

Hope that's helpful.

Happy mushrooming!

ROADKILL: I think those are the ones...Almost positive.
The only other realy defining characteristic that I can remember, is the caps were
a bit dry, not, dried, but just dry.
As well, some larger ones had small "dents" in them like golf balls....Thats all I can remember.
Thanks for tha help guys!
