Homemade mushroom manure/compost

I've been thinking.. why not just break up a spent sub and use it in potting mixes? Since the mushrooms we grow apparently have mycorrhizal benefits, you'd think this would actually be a better option for plants than commercial mushroom composts which are sterile or pasteurized.
What do you think? Genius plan?

Could be. Ask on the growery, perhaps. It makes sense to me. Or just try it with your tomatoes this season.

I will. I've tried adding spare bits of myc to potting soils before.. plants seem to like it. I bet it'll work great.

Yeah, but it's sterile as far as I know. I want to put the benefits of living fungi to use.

then use it
you might want to pasteurize it first
i really dont undestand the question because if you add a spent cake/sub to soil im pretty sure it will evidentially fruit again

Yeah, probably. Read about mycorrhizae if you need to. I think this plan is genius.

I guess it's not really such a big idea. I just don't hear of many mushroom growers trying it, so I thought I'd bring it up.

Some people here like to think they're the boss. That won't keep me from experimenting and asking my own questions. Never.

I use to put spent cakes and left over mono tub substrate in with my wifes flowers and little garden she use to grow. The plants seemed to love it, so I don't see why it would not work.

The search engine is your friend here. I've been recommending putting spent substrates into houseplants and gardens since long before I registered here. There's pictures over at topia of my houseplants with mushrooms from around 2000 when the site was nearly new, and they were posted on ADM going all the way back to the early 90s. When I grew pot from the early 70s to late 90s, the soil always had P cubensis around the plants. Spent substrates make excellent soil conditioner.
Fungi and plants are mutually beneficial. RR

I did happen to read your posts on this before making this one. They were actually the first thing I read upon thinking of this a few months back. But I don't hear about people trying this often enough, so I thought some talk on the matter was due. Final edit.
