How Early Is Too Early?
    #1227837 - 01/17/03 11:10 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Alright,
Me friend asks, "If my casing layer is 40% col., can I induce pinning and still get similar yields compared to a 85-90% col. casing? I really don't care if they're pretty, so long as the yield is approximately the same." Well har blickity bar me scurvy fungus freaks, answer the man!

pics would be good as I am unsure what you mean by a colonized casing. preferably tou just want to see the mycelium JUST BELOW the casing not almost half of it colonized.

You don't want the casing layer to be fully colonized as it can lead to overlay. If mycellium has broken through the casing layer already then you should put it in the terrarium and induce pinning now. It should be fine. It sounds to me like you didn't read the casing teks too well. You might want to look through the faq and study a little. It will only help you along the way. Good Luck Man !!!

Actually, I've read every casing tek and post I could get my hands on. Some of them have contradicted each other. One poster wrote that he frutied casings as soon as he saw mycelial growth (claiming it the best method), while the casing teks suggested waiting until the valleys of the casing were colonized.
There is so much information on this board concerning various aspects and methods of mycology that some of the advice clashes against itself. Portions of  "advice" from overzealous "experts" often cause confusion on relatively minute issues. I can see your point, but many of these questions asked by users are caused by the overreading of certain controversial methodologies.

For your spawn ,i.e; ryw or birdseed in jars- you want 100% before you open the jars to spawn. For your casing/casing layer- 40-50% colonization is fine.

With bulk substrate you must wait till the surface is fully colonized before using it. You have gotten confused about that, I know I did.
