Eek, so I think this was kind of a half failure and I'm not entirely pleased with how it came out but I was just kind of trying not to think about what I was drawing and just kept my hand moving. Kind of like that stream-of-conscious writing exercise, but with crayons. This is what came out . It's fun to do that and just see what happens, sometimes lol. The first one was done entirely in crayons, the second was ballpoint pens and sharpies, the third was magic markers, professionalism, lol. edit: I was not on psychedelics when these were drawn, but I'd really like to try this exercise on acid. I was on adderall though and these are all just manic drawings that I'd make at friend's places when everyone else just felt like sitting around smoking pot lol

My friend and I are collaborating on a story, in the style of a fairytale/children's - so far this is our insanely disorganized incomplete storyboard of the images in our head that we're trying to currently write about.
There is only like 50% of a cohesive link between images and it's completely non-linear right now. The protagonist floats into the sky with a balloon that is actually the moon, and floats up into the clouds to the point where up and down is completely indiscernable and there are mountaintops growing out of clouds(unpictured) where she finds a house(unpictured) in one and a very long hallway with a single red door with light coming from behind it. It's very dark and all she can see is the faintest light at the end of the hallway. It gets further and further away and the hallway gets darker until she is completely disoriented and can't even feel the floor beneath her feet/is floating. The only thing visible is again, said light, which turns out to belong to the angler fish she is swimming downwards towards.
From there she's rescued by another little girl wearing a panda hat who is growing scales and has lizard eyes who takes her to one of the mountains on the clouds and there's an adventure, and poignant things and morality and such and such and such which has yet to be written. There's also quite a bit of "backstory" to that main action involving sleepwalking and the moon and waking up staring at the moon and feeling like it's staring back(hence the eyes). This is a bit of a narration of our lives(both in metaphors and actual imagery I've seen/hallucinated)...drugs?!?! Psh, not us.

I'm actually really excited about this because it's my first real "project"/series that I'm undertaking and my friend is such a lovely talented writer. It's obviously probably not going to go anywhere, but maybe if we get wild and crazy with some lighting and performance art it might end up at a shitty fringe art show in a warehouse in the ghetto Philly.

just finished roughing this out last night - just started adding detail/shadows and highlights to thangs, so it's kinda blobby still.
Had a 3-panel posterboard laying around, I don't know wtf happened, because this is not at all what I originally intended to draw.
I got really lazy and just started using the panels as a palette and just decided to make a big mess of it - I had swapped the moon(1st panel) with the sun(last panel ). Just added the beginnings of the car and still have to finish the two panels - - not sure if I'm diggin' the car at all but I felt like it needed "something" and I'm gonna keep working on it
Kinda wanted to work in some subtle fractals, but feel like that wouldn't jive with the current drippy colorful mess aesthetic?
p.s. ^^ you fractal painters make me sick with jealousy. I am not good at patience, or measuring and scaling things, or applying any solid technique :/. I am such a messy impatient, sloppy person iwhen it comes to paint - finesse is something I admire a lot(and am slowly...slowly striving towards).

how long did you did that for?
I've spent a couple late nights on it. I used a bit of spray paint to speed up the process, but there's still a lot of it to finish.

DUDE, do it.
Art is like any other learned skill. No one picks up a guitar and is a musical genius, the same goes for art.
So many people I meet are intimidated by the possibility of making mistakes, and it's just so silly and not constructive, mistakes happen, paint over 'em and start again. Just get yourself some decent brushes, paint, and any canvas(paper, woodblock, cardboard, walls) - youtube some tutorials or something to give you a starting point.

Your wall is looking crazy good, spacerific - someone called it organic and I'm totally diggin that feel too. Reminds me a teeny bit of the work a microbiologist i know who also paints and draws a lot of inspiration from her field of study. Very cool.
Had a giant block o' wood sitting around and can't sleep tonight, so new project i guess. I've been real fond of using spray paint lately, had to stop that earlier thn i wanted tonight because the fumes have woken my roommate in the past .

She's just blowing on a dandelion, but I haven't gotten around to giving her a hand yet or figuring out what i wanna do. more drips and more fractals and pretty things in the backround will come tomorrow i guess .
sorry for shitty webcam photo.

Excerpts from my journal, been trying to just draw everyday, no matter what it is, gonna turn a couple into actual paintings, I think. Also been reeeeeally into crayons lately.
"I layed on top of a fleece blanket in a panda hat by the fire. My eyes the size of planets as the mountaintop moon burnt a hole straight through me. And I felt free."
 another lunar thing.

I think it would be fun to write an illustrated story about fluffy talking bunnies in a post-apocolyptic world.

Thankyou, spacerific - that's always good to hear lol.
There's no shortage of strange visual concepts in my head, and I realized that I'm not drawing enough if I have any intention of improving(I hope that my allergy to rulers/drafting tools will subside with work too, because I'm just super sloppy about it all) - so I'm gonna think up some weird graphic novel project. Just for fun.

Thankyou! It actually was a quick painting I did first, but I was not yet in my tie dye phase and I would like to make other changes to it as well.
The second to last one is actually the one I reeeeaaaaaaaaaaally wanna paint. It's a reeeally poorly done crayola rendition of an old super poor quality picture I found of me taken when I was focusing lights at 3 am and glaring...I just think the lighting in that photo is soo cool and it would look cool on a huge canvas, and I wanna experiment more with oil painting and I feel like it would be fun to try on this. I apologize for the quality/size, I cropped the shit out of it a while ago..kind of already looks like a painting because of that

I have 0 experience with oils, and it might be a bit out of my league in terms of really capturing the lighting(and not just throwing paint fucking everywhere, which is what I generally do), but might as well try.

This is sick.
Don't apologize, it's good to share your work . I think it's so interesting because everyone has an aesthetic style that's unique to them, and a lot of them are so different from mine and I learn from that...like eventually I'm gonna have to learn how to be more meticulous and patient and take my time to produce something nearly as detailed and impressive as the stuff a lot of people post here.
And sometimes I get sucked into overly representational art, and it's nice to be hit in the face with abstract stuff and keeps me from letting myself get too stuck in the same style.

stellarshnap said: Good luck to you . Oils are fun, I've never had any success while trying to make something, but I remember just fucking around and making this:

If you do ever paint that third one, let me know
Thanks, I'll need it lol. That's cool - it's like an eyeball vortex in the night sky . And I'm definitely gonna repaint it, I have a terrible attention span and no patience so I tend to do rush jobs or not finish stuff and then immediately move onto the next idea.

that's the original draft, quite different, but i think i prefer the newer one myself - or at least mash the two up a bit.

So please, no one try and then blackmail me if they are successful. I'm also worried that someone who is friends with me on facebook will recognize the images and connect my account to my identity. yeah, I'm sketchy I know.
Some things:

I'm embarrassed to admit I have an associates degree in graphic design, because my designs suck. But I figured I'd share something.
EDIT: All mostly done in illustrator, with some photoshop. I need to get a tablet so I can actually illustrate on a computer.
I actually really your style - I appreciate that kinda simplicity of design and it's something I'm really trying to work to implement more into my style. I'm trying to branch out more into graphic design stuff, as the freelance lighting work is getting very exhausting for me and I would like to focus more on actually designing shit instead of doing tech oriented stuff.
I'm already relatively proficient with photoshop/adobe products - but out of practice and have no real experience creating original content with that kinda stuff - my mom designs instructional/educational course tools and has a bunch of software she's gonna hook me up with so I'm pretty siked.

stellarshnap said: pirate-blues: thanks I'll definitely keep that in mind in the future. I like your first as well, the other one just had eyes, and I love eyes. Also I feel if you made the colors more vibrant, they would contrast with the couple more intensely, and make it all the more awesome. But I digress.
Everlong: I like the first three. First one would make an awesome shirt, 2nd one I have to think about a little more, but so far I'm looking at it as a metaphor for how pigeon like humans can be. Good stuff. Third one I love cause I love eyes, and it's an eye, with the cosmos.
Yes agreeeed about more vibrancy in the colors. I feel like I must've been subconsciously thinking of this alex grey painting with the second one - which is always frustrating when you realize you just pretty much made a cheap rip off of something else, but oh well. Figured you'd enjoy it, if you haven't glanced at it yet.

Yeah, I see what you mean - I think my stuff is very sloppy and rough around the edges most of the time, and there is nothing particularly wrong with that kind of style..but I would really like to develop the patience and technique to produce something really polished.

.Anndd, I think I posted this one when I first started out on it a couple weeks ago.. I left it alone for a bit, I couldn't get it all in frame, but it's still pretty unfinished. It's a big ass piece of wood, so I think maybe I'll try and make it into a table top for a drafting board or vanity or something eventually?

The method is good, just get more tools and keep it going, eventually you'll start noticing stuff and make things happen:
Talent has nothing to do with it, it's just practice and persistence.
Word. Every time someone tells me "I can't draw/paint/do anything" I always ask them if they actually sat down and made an attempt to learn how to and put effort into practicing.
The answer is always no.
Not everyone can create beautiful profound works of art, even fewer can make a living from it - but anyone who can hold a pencil can learn how to paint and draw. Of course, some people have the demeanor and ability to pick it up quicker than others, but that's the way it is with pretty much everything .
Whatever you do, don't stop practicing! Who gives a fuck if you make mistakes(that's what always stopped me from learning at first telling myself that it would suck and to not even try), that's what's supposed to happen when you're learning.
Awesome painting, spacerific, your work is so lovely. There's a lot of talent in this thread, very daunting.
