The moment before you fall asleep
    #1227246 - 01/17/03 06:23 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Ok, I get this weird thing a few seconds before falling asleep, where suddenly I get very very vivid visualizations in my mind. It's almost like I'm looking at whatever I'm thinking. It only happens when I focus on it. But if I think of my computer desk, I can see it so clearly its almost scary. Like I could reach out and touch it. Normally, my visualizing abilities are average at best. Does anyone else get this phenomenon?

Yes, and I think it's called hypnogogic phenomena or something like that  :smirk:

It would be really useful to be able to cultivate this ability so you could use it anytime, I would think. Any ides how one might go about doing that? Besides sleeping more often.

I've been practicing with this for years, and can now summon any image I can think up, although it drifts away into all sorts of nonsense RIGHT BEFORE I fall asleep. There are auditory hallucinations as well

What I meant was I can summon these scenes while laying in bed.... not at any time.

I think you have to be extremely relaxed in order for this to happen; like I don't think you'd even be able to do this standing up..

I know exactly what you're talking about. Right before I fall asleep I sometimes catch myself and wake back up, and recall what I was just thinking about. It's like the point where your thoughts are starting to turn into an actual dream. Pretty cool stuff.

This is one of the reasons I love falling asleep. Anywas, you notice how when you are little your memories are generally really far apart and as you get older they start to coalesce. At some point you finally reach 'conciousness'. It is like at this point your memories are so close together that they form a sequence or flow of events we call 'conciousness'. Its like a pyramid sort of. With your birth at the bottom and your death the top when you reach a point or pinnacle of experience.
- - - - - - the tiny times
- - - - - - - childhood
- - -- - - - - ---- --- - adolescence
-- -- - ---- --- - -------adulthood
--- --- -- -- -- older and older
. death
kinda looks like dna analysis which is weird... anyways each point represents a memory you have and they get closer and closer together as you get older. Remember when you were 5? What about your first ice cream cone? I'm going to try and use this hypnogogic technique and I'll keep you posted on interesting things that pop up...

I just get weird "illogic", like seeing robots in the walls, then feeling concern that they might disconnect something inside me.

That's just one I remembered `cause I wrote it down once.

Very rarely, I'll wake up with "ridgid thinking" There will be a topic, or issue, or concept that I am focused on, and can't let go, like say "Captain Crunch".

I would look at an object, and try to determine how it related to Captain crunch, is it a berry, or berrylike in any way? Would it be crunchy, what would it's reaction be to a liquid?

I need to get up. Do I have a boat or something? Do I need a boat for where I'm going?

The state between awake and asleep is called the Theta state. This is the brainwave we spend the least amount of time in, but its a very powerful one. The vision you see are called Hypnogogic imagery. To stay in this state for longer periods of time.. prop your head up a little.. and practice. It takes a good amount of practice and concentration.. but once you are able to balance between awake and asleep without falling asleep..and staying in the Theta state.. it can be very insightful and profound. Let your body go to sleep, but keep your mind awake. Let your mind drift until that last cruical moment before you lose consciousness.. and start thinking.. anything to keep your mind going and stay in the inbetween state, or the void as I call it.

There is also brainwave tapes that you play in your ear, similar to hemi sync.. I have one that keeps you in the Theta state for up to an hour. It can be very intense.

Actually I'm about to head for Theta state and transfer into some nice deep Delta sleep. Just wanted to give me two pesos in this thread

Afew weeks ago I woke up and thought I was a tetris piece, I was tryin to slot myself into the right part....

I generaly drif off into nothingness before sleep. I can see images in my minds eye if I wanna, usualy random stuff. they r very clear though if im stoned, and verysureal.

I believe it works on the same principles as hemi-sync...e.g. binaural beats..
I have tapes from the Brainwave series
Keep in mind you need to listen to it through headphones to get the proper effect

Back when i was constantly smoking very high grade marijuana, i had something similar to this. For a few months, at least every other night, right at the moment where i was supposed to fall asleep, i would be awakened by a loud noise, usually like a horn. After it woke me up, I would remember that the noise had slowly built, getting louder and louder until right at them moment of falling sound asleep, the noise would become too loud and wake me up.
After this happened a few times, i would become aware of the noise when it was building and i would wake up on my own, so that i could stop the noise and go back to sleep peacefully.
