The movie and the book weren't so much about DRUGS IS COOL than they were about the social commentary of the time it takes place in. Hunter S. Thompson's style of writing(Gonzo) is hard for some people to follow because of the blend of Fiction and Truth, but behind the bad ass drug scenes and crazy dialogue is a very real and objective look on America at the time.

Just my two cents. Many people are polarized by the book and film, especially the film - but it's definitely worth watching. I'd recommend reading the novel first.

Terry Gilliam is the man. That movie is awesome.

Almost Famous was pretty gay at times. Kate Hudson is unbelievably annoying to me too so I think she ruined the movie for me.

I laughed out loud at this.

I've watched it literally countless times and it's still just as great as it was the first time I watched it.

Never gets old.

In my opinion it's the most successful book-to-movie transition I know of.

I actually watched the movie before I read the book, and was amazed at how well they captured almost everything in it.

have seen the movie a few times.

but i literally just yesterday finished the book for the first time. It is an amazing read. It was the third HST book i have read (Hell's Angles+Rum Diary)

the film stays very true to the story, but if you want the true experience that is Gonzo journalism...the book must be read first!

i recommend all of HST's works .

I didn't like it very much.

And I don't see why anyone would want to watch it whilst tripping; from what I remember, most of the drug portrayals are negative. And half of it is just filmed in dingy, dirty apartments; I got bad vibes from it, and I was sober.

It wasn't awful by any means, just failed to excite me in any way really. You should probably watch it anyway, seeing as how many people here like it. I'm guessing it has something to do with the drug culture, though, as I've met many people - who tend to stay on the good side of the law - who didn't particularly like it either.

I agree, the drug portrayls are negative a little. Chaotic. I wouldn't watch it tripping.

But it's worth a watch.

Fallacy. Natural Born Killers is all right at best. Way over-rated, Oliver Stone is very hit or miss. NBK did have its moments though.

You obviously have never seen The Running Man...

But yeah, great book-to-movie adaptation.  Terry Gilliam knows what he's doing, but HST's words are soo good.

When NBT first came out I thought it was a masterpiece. Now? I'm not so sure. I watched it a few months ago and it seemed...outdated. Really outdated.

I got both Fear and Loathing & NBT on blu-ray and if I was forced to throw one out, I'd toss NBT in the can without a second thought.

Oh it was definitely chaotic, and that's an aspect I loved about it. I mean, psychedelic trips are chaotic.

Why shouldn't the movie be too?

And yeah you could look at the drug portrayals as "negative", but also realistic considering just how many different drugs they had in the briefcase.

I have entered Fear & Loathing territory a few times myself on wild drug binges, and I feel the book and movie both do a great job of capturing what the madness is like...

There are some hilarious parts in the book though. I love HST's writing style in that.

On a side-note, Fear & Loathing is the only one I've read by him. Do any of his others approach that level?

I found that the drug portrayals weren't so realistic. The only bit that seemed realistic to me is (and forgive me if any of this is incorrect, as it's been a while since I saw the film) when Depp sees that receptionist's face morph during the acid trip, when he first arrives at the casino - and to be honest, I think anybody could have thought to depict that, even those who've never tried a hallucinogen. But things like seeing people transform into weird reptilian monsters, and turning psychotic and completely ruining an apartment? From what I'd guess, that kind of stuff only happens on high doses of datura and other deliriants.

I think that one important thing to remember about Fear and Loathing is that Thompson was intentionally trying to be over the top. Of course stuff like seeing people morph into lizards and have a blood orgy doesn't happen for most people who try LSD. When I watch the movie (or read the book for that matter) I always try to bear in mind that it's intended to be extreme and shocking. Although I don't have a source at the moment, I'm relatively sure that Thompson has been quoted as saying most of the events in Fear and Loathing were seriously embellished when he wrote the book.

Plus, it's Hunter S. Thompson, can you really take him that seriously?

--------------------
The story goes, or the way that I was told
There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low
And so he called all the wise men to the hall
And begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls
But here’s the thing, they came back with a ring
It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king
Engraved in black, it had no front or back
But there were words around the band that said
Just know: This Too Shall Pass

I've seen some pretty insane hallucinations from psychedelics alone.

During the part you're talking about, I love the way they show the design on the carpet breathing and flowing... that's EXACTLY how it looks when I'm tripping.
In fact it's probably the best representation of psychedelic hallucinations that I've ever seen in a movie.
