"Species Library"

I know we have the galleries, but I reckon it'd be good if we had a library of pictures for all the different species and allow anyone to link an image to the library (and the images would join it upon approval).
That way, that could be someone's first port of call when they suspect they've found a specific species. They'd get to look at loads of different images of the species from different sources all in the same place.
What do we think?

I would suggest signing up for an account there, it's very handy!

Well I didn't mean for me, per se. I more meant for n00bs who flood the board all the time with IDs for mushrooms that look nothing like they're asking.

They can use the search feature. Check the box that says "images" on the search page to bring up posts with images in them.
If we hand everything to the slackers on a silver platter, when will it end?

Wasn't meaning handing them stuff on a silver platter. Just thought they'd find it more useful than the search feature because it brings everything to one place.

Unless I am dumb (which is quite possible), I think the search features includes smileys as images, so it is still a bit ineffective.
I just tried a search for "Lacunosa" with the images clicked and a bunch of posts came up that had smileys but no pictures.
And compiling data for ease in research is not "Handing them it on a silver platter". Are encyclopedias, or is this site "handing them it on a silver platter"? No. It is a compilation of research. Making things easier for noobs is fine as long as they are still learning something.
Don't get me wrong, I still don't think it is a necessary addition to the site.
I'm a goofball, don't listen to me....

Just throwing the idea out there. I'm well aware that there are already less convenient ways to achieve the same thing. It's the convenience factor that would differentiate it.

Yeah this sites search feature isn't very handy sometimes.

I don't think it would be hard to implement and it would be very useful for people with "Did I find this species?" type questions (and a great place to send them if you're not a n00b).

Maybe they should just fix the search feature to not include smileys as images?

I think the search feature is a crude mechanism for achieving the task, but it's none of my business, ultimately.

It wouldn't be so bad if they fixed it.
And of course it is your business. You opinion is valued here, I would assume. Maybe try suggesting it in Feedback and Administration. Maybe they will like it and implement it.

I might even make the thing myself and host it, but the decentralisation would make people less likely to use it - which is why I think it would be good to have it here even if such things exist elsewhere online.

Either way wouldn't it be a good idea to compile various pictures of confirmed species for everyones sake? Or maybe do it by regions, it would be like a group effort to document different species with photos and such.. I think it would be a very helpfull tool to everybody. In theory we could also write a "Shroomery" book on all mushrooms around the world.. Just an idea but I don't think it's a bad one..

That's a more static resource, though, falcon. I'm talking about something dynamic and interactive that people can add their own finds to. It's self-perpetuating, too, because when someone IDs their mushroom, they can add it to the collection.

As I've said, the decentralisation makes it less likely to be used.

There's an edit button on the bottom of the page, it used to be the shroom wiki pages. I think you can still add stuff to it, but it has to be approved.

So for each species, there could be a limitless number of photographs?
Also, this would allow people to upload blurry and dried mushroom photographs, which could be very useful for comparison purposes.
