The verm was super fine i think. I couldent see it but it felt groud up and almost like soil. Then a bag of cactus soil..Would these make a good casing or what? If not where could I find the casing materials I need...In Canada...And what casing mixture is the best, planning on using straw tek. Thanks!

I prefer the fine or medium grade, personally. It holds water better. It should be fine as a casing

I dont think the cactus soil will be useful for anything. If I remember correctly, cactus soil is very water absorbant. And the very fine vermiculite does not allow the mycilium to colonize it very quickly. If still might work as a casing layer but definitly not as well as the larger, coarse vermiculite. The fine verm however works very well as a dry seal for brf/verm cakes. As well as what is the best stuff to use for casing, I always use a 60/40 coir/verm mixture and have had excellent results.

Cactus soil is made to be easy draining, but still has the ability to hold water and give your substrate a non-nutritious casing layer. It's not super water absorbant at all. That would drown most cacti.
As with most of the things in the hobby, trial and error and personal preference play a huge part in your cultivation.

Go to a local pet store for coir. They sell it as a reptile bedding material. Verm should be at a local green house.
