15 year old spore print, viable? 1
#1225041 - 01/16/03 11:30 PM (21 years, 15 days ago) |

These are 2 posts I made in another forum, I don't feel like going through and editing it:
I was putting finch food and some bird seed into jars for later when I make my spore/clone syringes and went into the attic to get the third case of jars. Unlike the other cases this one was tapped shut and didn't feel quite as heavy as the others. I rip the thing open and find 4 out of the 12 jars remaining and thought to myself that I hoped that I could finish off the rest of the bag of bird seed with these jars when I noticed some other things in the boxes. I found Dextrose made by Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, Yeast, two small bags of "Agar Agar", and an envelope. I thought maybe this was some stuff for preserving fruit/veggies until I opened the padded envelope and saw a shroom on the front. Above the shroom says "Lux Natura". Inside of the blue folded piece of paper is a plastic bag taped to the inside with a spore print in it. The print was taken on the type of plastic that is used on overhead projectors and is broken up. Inside of the paper in stamped letters it says "AMAZONIAN STRAIN". Theres another piece of paper with it which is basically an advertisement for a book made by Terrence and Dennis Mckenna.
Postmark on the stamp on the outside of the envelope is 1980, 1986, or 1988. I can't make out the last number but the bottom part of it is rounded. The last number was stamped on a dark part of the postage stamp so its very hard to make out.
The address for Lux Natura is:
Lux Natura SUITE 1196 2000 CENTER ST. BERKELEY, CA 94704
The cases of mason jars were owned by my father (hes dead, 7-8 years ago). Can anyone tell me anything about this stuff? I will scan the pieces of paper in a few hours. Most important of all, is the spore print viable? I thought I would share this little story since I thought many of you would find it interesting. I wondered why the hell we had 4-5 cases of mason jars. Ah well, since he only made use of about one case looks like I'll make use of the others. One more question, there are two cases of jars, some jars are missing from the cases, but inside of the jars looks like mounds of vasilene (thats the best way I can describe it). Any idea what that is?
From IRC:
[05:59:52] looks like a publishing company.. [05:59:55] now defunct [06:00:06] lux natura fall catalog [06:01:14] the word means "natural light" [06:01:20] or light of nature [06:02:53] it looks like they mostly sold and published terrance mckenna's works [06:03:55] in fact, the only other book i can find besides mckenna books is the oss and oeric's psyilocibin magic mushroom grower's guide... which.. now that i think about it, is mckenna too.. oss and oeric were pseudonyms :P [06:04:00] he probably owned the company [06:05:27] yeah, the company was owned by him
It looks like its from 1988:
link is here
"First, the LUX NATURA Fall 1988 Catalog. Lux Natura, 2140 Shattuck Avenue, Box 2196, Berkeley, CA 94704. Mostly listing many tapes by McKenna, but also a new expanded edition of _Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide_ ($12.95), and a mushroom spore advertisement:
HIGHEST QUALITY MUSHROOM SPORES collected from Amazonian strains of STROPHARIA CUBENSIS (also known as Psilocybe Cubensis) are now available from: Syzygy. You will receive several million spores on a glass coverside sealed in a plastic envelope for just $10.00 per sporeprint, plus $1.00 for shipping per order (Add 4% sales tax in Hawaii.) Send your order to: SYZYGY, P.O. Box 619, Honaunau, HI 96726. Offer void where prohibited."

Wow, i dont know how long spores last(ive heard different from many sources) but shit, theres only one way to find out, id throw some in just one jar instead of making a bunch. would be pretty cool if they grew. Thanx for sharing the story.

What a great story. You have to try growing those spores. And I for one would be interested in trading for a priint if they grow.

These are the dates of U.S. stamp rate increases. Your envelope showed 22 cents postage...so I guess it was posted and mailed in the first 3 months of 1988...according to your deduction.
March 22, 1981: 18 cents. November 1, 1981: 20 cents. February 17: 1985: 22 cents. April 3, 1988: 25 cents.

I'm going to send parts of it to various people who have labs. First time grower and have four myco bags incubating right now that were started a few days ago. I don't want to screw it up if they are viable.

why not just save em? frame it or somthing, and have a memory that your dad was a cool guy, that your dad (probably) grew shrooms. cause you can always get another amazonian strain print somewhere. plus this one is most liklely not viable, but you never know.

You could take a clean ear swab and gently go over the print, this way there will be enough spores on the swab which you could send to people. This will save the card from being cut.

The print is in shards of plastic from aging and heat/cold changes.

Give Gentoo Linux a try if you like Debian
http://www.gentoo.org but I'm sure you've heard of it, just in case.
It has a ports based package management system but ten times better.

None of my buisness, but I find this interesting. Was your father the type of man to be known to toke, or shroom or anything? Like how would he come into possesion of this product? Was he a mycologist or anything to do with botany? You don't have to answer any Qs but I'm so curious! What a treasure...

I mailed John Allen regarding this catalogue as I found it to be of extreme interest and he said that I could post his reply on this subject as he is having lighting/laptop problems hence the bad spelling.
Quote:
that was Terene McKenna's company. His spore comany lited in that ad in Hawaii still sells spores through his ex-wife Kat Harrison who did the illustrations ofr the Psilocybin Growers Guide. Do not have a copy of Terences old catalogue. You can add my reply if you like. Sorry about the spelling in the last note. My light blew out and i have only the screen light to se with and a lot of no letter images on my keyboard to irritate my eyes also. Sorry, mj

I remember that I think it was a yeast and they rejuvenated it and started brewing 'jurrassic beer' as a marketing ploy - BTW that was YEARS ago i was still in high school um - '95? I also remember a few years back that an 8 or 11 (?) year old P tampanensis was recovered and brought back into cultivation
I think it would be fascinating if you could get it going if all the vendors who sell this strain could send you a syringe adn they could all be grown out side by side to mark how the strain has changed over time - for better or worse

This casing was a test of a five year old spore print. Lots of mutants, but still viable. I'm not even sure the mutants were the result of the age. Give it a try when you learn the ropes.

Wow...too weird. I got a really old print too... Got it long time ago...never tryed to work it yet.
Its called La Chorrera.
Anyone ever hear of that before?
The paper is really faded...looks old as hell. When I get time...ill check it out.
Never heard of a strain by that name.
Gotta be Mexican I would think...
