George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' Series
    #3638567 - 01/17/05 11:22 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Any Shroomerites read Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' fantasy series? There are three books out so far (A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords) and two more in the pipeline. These are by far the best fiction books I have ever read.

If anyone has not read these books and is a fan of fantasy I highly recommend them.

Multiple intertwining plot lines weaving together the past to the present with forshadowings of things yet to come. Dozens of characters you will hate to love and love to hate. No happy endings, just gritty realism. History, legend, myth and and the re-emergence of magic in a fuedal setting.

The only problem with reading these books is that anything else I pick up afterward seems weak. Instead, I keep re-reading the series. There is enough there for at least four reads.

Yes, I am a geek.

I haven't read this series, but I've enjoyed Martin's stories for a long time. I'll definitely check this out!

Yay! I knew there would be at least one other person here at the Shroomery who knew what the hell I was talking about. I'm looking forward to the next book too. It's going to be called 'A Feast for Crows' (in case you didn't know). There is a teaser chapter on Martin's website. Looks like some new characters will be coming into play.

If you haven't read it yet, check it out. The chapter is written from Theon's Uncles POV (I think his name is Aemon), the priest of the Drowned God. It opens with him initiating new priests into the fold by drowning them in the ocean then resuscitating them. Those that live become the new priests.

Ha ha ha, only Martin could come up with something like that.

I didn't even realize he was such a prolific writer until recently. I will have to check out some of his older stuff too.

Sweet, thanks for the link  Drowning people and seeing if they live, yeah that sounds like Theons crazy uncle.......George has an incredible imagination.

I want the next one to be done.
It's not entirely spectacular fantasy, and has a slight tendency to drag, but it's worth reading.
If you like this series tho, you'll like his other stuff, seeing as it's pretty much the same.

Ever read the "memory, sorrow and thorn" trilogy by Tad Williams?

Now THAT is some good shit.

Yes, I've been reading his stuff in Science Fiction magazines since HS in the mid and late '80's. I think he actually started in the mid 70's. Good stuff!

I've read a Game of Thrones and a Clash of Kings, I'm going to have to reread them soon though... it's been awhile.

They are very very good I think, on par with Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.

Ha... weird seeing this ancient ass thread bumped while I'm in the middle of the series. I read the first two and have the 3rd on audio book. Pretty good series but they do drag on a little too long.

How many books has this series gotten to?

I've still only read the first two, and am currently re-reading the entire Wheel of Time that I mentioned 5 years ago.

These are like the best fucking fantasy books on the face of the earth.  I too am sooooo stoked for the next book.

The plots are so ingeniously constructed, especially A Storm of Swords....the twist in that book had me speechless.  You can tell it's really good because you should see it coming, but you care so much about the characters that you don't.

edit: woah old thread
