These are a scattered cluster of mushrooms growing on fairly recently disturbed land over which I've mulched with straw and cedar bark.
Smell:  like common grocery store mushrooms (agaricus, I think).

Gills: no gills. Same convoluted surface on underside

Stem: greyish tan, firm, hollow, not fibrous.

Cap: very dark brown, velvety, convoluted, irregular (not honeycombed, like morels I've seen.)

Spore print color: None, so far (3 hours).  Will I get a spore print with no gills?

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked in CA, Sierra foothills, 2200 elev.

Looks like a Gyromitra species...A "False Morel".

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.
