Friendly fire
    #1223149 - 01/16/03 08:58 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

A videotape of the bombing released by the Air Force Wednesday showed the two Illinois National Guard pilots worrying just moments after the 500-pound bomb exploded.

"I hope that was the right thing to do," Schmidt said.

Umbach replied: "Me too."

Bomb first, ask questions later seems to be the Modus Operandi for the American military lately...

Hepped up on goofballs no less.

It doesn't seem to me like these guys should go to jail for this or anything. They should probably have to peel potatoes or whatever for a long time, but to put em away and ruin them and their families would just cause more suffering.

Too much of that already has happened over this incident.

It's tragic that they died and further investigation should have been done by intelligence. What was the point of this thread? I don't think there is a person on this site that would be happy this happened. Do you actually think they did this on purpose?

I think it's more to do with the procedures being followed. The americans killed more allied troops in the gulf war than the Iraqi's did. It looks like nothings changed.

Component said: 24% of the deaths in the Gulf War were due to frindly fire

Not according to component (24%) but your point is taken. There will always be friendly fire in war and every war in history has had it. Anyone who's a soldier knows the risk of fighting in waves. I know i did, it was a little unsettling.

No, component said 24% were due to friendly fire. That doesn't mean the rest were killed by Iraqi's.

As far as I remember the iraqi's killed about 30 americans in direct combat. The american defence analyst John Pike says the americans killed around 44 allied troops with friendly fire.

Most of the allied deaths came from accidents and from minefields after the war had ended.

If I remember correctly, the piolets in question disobeyed their orders to not fire on anyone without ground confirmation. The guy was a hothead who wanted to prove himself, so he fired where he saw fire. And it's pretty hard to mistake ground fire for shots fired at you if you're in a damn plane.

Damn right they did. But don't go blaming the United States as a whole because some asshole couldn't follow orders.

I hope you're being sarcastic. There wasn't a soldier out there that wanted to kill people on their own side. As far as following orders, if they refused to then i say can em.

OK they didn't kill their own on purpose, but they fired without being sure that the people on the ground were enemies. So in essence, the piolets' deliberate stupidity was the cause.

I'd say it was their ignorance but that's 6 in one hand and a 1/2 dozen in the other.

I like how they "pretty up" the name of the drugs to "GO PILLS".  It makes them sound like their harmless and acceptable.  I never got GO PILLS when i was in the army and i feel cheated!!!

That guy should fry... He was told not to go in and he said "Im going in for self defence".. Right their he knows that hes got other options but the one he chose was to bomb the ground without knowing who they were...

I hope he rots in jail.

From the January 19, 2003 issue of the Denver Post's article "Officer: Pilot was never in danger" -

Lt. Col. Richard Anderson II, who was in charge of all coalition pilots' combat orders, said the pilots and his mission commander were also under "extremely tight" restrictions on weapon use.
Standard procedure would have been to evade surface-to-air fire, not attack...
On a videotape taken from Schmidt's (one of the accused pilots) F-16, a flight commander can be heard saying "hold fire" after Scmidt requests permission to fire his 20mm cannons toward gunfire on the ground.
