    #1222483 - 01/16/03 12:57 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Well I was just thinking that since herb plants love Blood/bone meal so much maybe fungus would....has anyone tried to mix in a little Blood/Bone meal with their substrate?

I don't think your fungi would like it.

You guys don't know what Blood and Bone meal is...it is not "dried blood and bones" ROFL. Blood and Bone meal is normally a soil addative much like you would use Vermiculite and Perlite in soil mixes. Blood and bone meal are high in nutrients and thus, used very succesfully with Plant Cultivation. However, the prevailing nutrients are forms of Nitrogen..........SOOOO, let me rephraze my question, would mixing a small amount of organic Nitrogen into your substrate add or detract from Shroom Quality and yeild?

hmmm didn't post my whole post last time...here it is again... :blush:

quote from a google search::

Description
Blood meal is a dried blood product and is an excellent source of quickly available organic nitrogen. Contains 13% total nitrogen.

.....

so , yes, organic source of nitrogen.. but dried blood in mush cult??? hmmm

maybe.. i really don't know but i have serious doubts!!try it and let us know

I beleive verimiculite is just there to hold water until the Mycelium needs water in which case it gets sucked out. i dont know about adding nitrogen, try doing a Forum or Faq search

cottonseed meal is a great addition to any compost!
As far as blood or bone goes not sure.
Most premium mushroom composts contain cottonseed meal.

blood meal is dried blood from slaughter houses. bone meal is ground up cow bones. some people at overgrow.com and in the UK are avoiding both because of the mad cow scare.

hmmm who knows....I guess I will have to try it. I use it a lot for...a hobby my cat has (Overgrow) and it has always worked well for that purpose...prolly won't be good for mushies but I guess it is worth a try if no one else has tried it.

I will keep all of you posted on what my results are.  :wink:
