Morels and Chanterelles?
    #12218711 - 03/17/10 01:24 PM (14 years, 15 days ago)

Is there any correlation to their habitats? Are they mutually exclusive or would it be wise to search my chant spots in the coming weeks. I'm in Coastal South Carolina and had great success with Chanterelles last year (it was my first season foraging and I didn't start looking til early summer so I'm clueless about local Morel possibilities.) I appreciate the help.

Personally, I associate chanterelles more with acidic soils and morels with limy soils, but then again, I don't have much of the latter around here and I believe chanterelles also do well on limy soils. Other than that, they could occur in the same habitats, but morels appear to do well in the vicinity of trees like poplar and elm that I don't really associate with chanterelles.

I find chanterelles and morels in the same general area, although I think they prefer different host trees (in my area, the chants prefer oak, and the morels prefer elm or black cherry).

My favorite chanterelle spot is maybe 50 yards away from my favorite morel spot.
