What is fire?
    #1221748 - 01/15/03 04:49 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

It's not solid.  It's not liquid.  And it's not a gas.

What the hell is it???

Is it made out of atoms?

Is it alive?  It can move and reproduce itself.  It eats things and breathes things in the sense that it coverts certain substances into different forms.

Some people would say that fire is simply the coversion of heat or electrical energy into light energy, but no other form of "energy" behaves in the way that fire does.

Fire is weird as shit!

And why is it that we are mesmerized by staring at it?
And we love to tame it by means of candles and incense and cigarettes, as if it were a wild animal that we were trapping in a zoo.

What

is up

with fire?

Fire is a release of energy in the form of light and heat.

Well we've been gazing at it for thousands upon thousands of years since it basically revolutionized the way we eat and live......maybe that has something to do with why it's so fascinating to us now?

The law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. So all energy is just one form of energy turning into another.

Fire doesn't really fit this definition... At least not in my opinion. It can definitely be created and destroyed. And like I said before, no other energy actually moves or creates more of itself... I don't think any other energy actually converts one substance into another, either.

Fire is a product in a chemical reaction.
If you stop the reaction (douse the fire), then of course the fire will "go out".

Power is the lure of the dark side, do not be fooled by the light of the flame for it burns the soul and consumes only for itself. Renounce power and you renounce the dark side.

good question....

Fire is a form of Plasma, the fourth state of matter.
i believe fire is a 3rd dimensional "shadow" of a hyperdimensional Source.

i live to merge with the flame...

it is not destroyed, it is becoming another type of energy, eg: light/sound/heat

actually, when i think about what i just said it makes no sense. since the energy i just described manifests itself as fire.

i'm stoned right now and this is weird...

fire is a tool given to man by god for a variety of purposes including the concentration and inhalation of smoke from psychoactive plants.

Opinions don't really fit into physical science. Have you forgotten that all energy has a mass equivalent, and vice verse (E=MC>2). Fire is a form of energy, and is a great demonstration of the famous equation. All matter can be turned into energy through burning. When the fire dies, much of the energy disperses outwards, and what is left is ash.

Fire is the combination of different phenomena.  There is chemical energy bound up in a fuel (energy is neither created or destroyed).  Combustion is an exothermic reaction through which fuel and oxygen combine, releasing stored energy and forming new chemical products with less stored energy than the reactants.  The release of this stored energy is responsible for what we percieve as fire.  It heats up gaseous particles of escaping products of combustion to the point that they release light (this occurs as electrons jump to higher energy levels and then release energy in the form of light when they decend to lower levels).  A convection current of hot air is what gives fire its apparent shape.  Fire is not simply gas, it is the result of a gas being generated and illuminated via a chemical reaction (combustion).  It is not alive.  It is not any more unusual or mysterious than any other physical phenomenon.  However... does the fact that it is completely explainable by science make it any less magical? Or more so?

SHIT... i just read some of the other replies to this query... did anyone here pay attention in chemistry or physics? shit... plasma? 4th state of matter? (i know what plasma is and fire is definitely not plasma!) from another dimension? matter turning into energy!!  wtf!? DAAAAAAMN!!!

Fire(combustion) is a chemical reaction, E=m c2 has nothing to do with it.
