Motorbike for hardcore travelling PART 2 * 1
    #12217184 - 03/17/10 06:26 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Well i think i narrowed down my choice of bikes...

(my first thread about bikes: http://www.gmamoto.gr/images/akrapovic/03_APRILIA-PEGASO-07.jpg)

While the best, the highest sitting, the most powerful the most versatile and the most expensive bike is BMW HP2 Megamoto, i dont need to make a thread about this bike...

That bike is out of range atm... and i hear BMW bikea are not that reliable...

I was at the biggest bike shop in town yesterday and the dude there said that my old bike of choice the Kawasaki KLX 250 is not that good for extensive travelling, he told me about 2 dual purpose bikes wheich would be perfect for me... both bikes are 650/660 cc, both sit very high off the ground (250 mm) and dont cost an arm and a leg... however there are 2 choices and i need to decided which one to buy!!

So here they are:

First bike is Aprilia Pegaso 650
Cost £4900

Pros:
Cheap, good looking, powerful dual purpose bike

cons
I hear Aprilia is not that relaible and hard to repair, can anyone confirm this?

Second bike: Yamaha XT660
£6,600

Pros:
Reliable, beautiful, powerful bike
Cons
Quiet expensive and not in stock - cant test drive it...

So, what do you think dudes?? Which bike and why??

The yamaha looks great.

I've heard that too and it was the first thing i thought, when i seen that picture.

You might want to consider a Suzuki v-strom if you arn't planning any hardcore offroading. A strom can be setup to be similar to a KLR, but with higher performance.

Probably a little bit cheaper than the Yamaha too.

Anyways - you are looking at the right style of bikes now. I would strongly consider buying used first though.

I have a Yammy and I love it!!  I'm sure Yamaha parts are more readily available than Aprilia.

As far as auto's go, That would require a huge tansmission, wouldn't it?  added weight, harder to repair, etc.  Also, it's very nice to be able to use the engine RPM's to slow down rather than relying on brake power, especially going down steep hills/mountains.

I would never get a automatic if they were available, that would take ALL the fun out of it.

Anyways, good luck and have fun with your adventures.

Dudes i have another question...

I got couple grands saved...

And i am thinking : should i spend it on a new top spec PC... OR, save another 5K and buy the bike??

The thing is it will take me half a year to come up with additional 5K... and if i buy PC it means i need to come up with 7K - not much difference u see??

I have little pleasure here to start with, building and using new PC will be lots of fun.. and i can then spend a 6 months saving for a bike...

But on the other hand i have a nice laptop which works well, except modern wrfare is a bit slow and monitor is not that big...

Im confuised... and i hear word i will get a lot of $$$ in summer anyway, so i should just buy a PC for now..

edit: i am a PC enthusiast and i had 5 PCs in the past, i put a lot of thought into this as well:

What should i buy

Buy the PC and buy a USED bike for less $3500 or less.

+ don't forget you will need to buy gloves and a helmet + other accessories. Have you looked into insurance costs? Or lessons? ...

BMW make some of the most reliable long-distance sport-touring machines in the world, alongside Honda.  You can run some of those bikes for a dozen thousand miles without maintenance (minus mostly fluid changes and tire inspection/changes).

Personally the Yamaha looks like a better bike, but I'd recommend something more dual-purpose.  The longer I have my 250 Rebel the more I realize I really like the bike, but I want something that tops out a bit lower, maybe the same speed (Rebel goes around 80-85 max), but is MUCH more suited to off-road driving.  The added stability that you get from dual-purpose features is well worth the loss of speed.

Both of those bikes seem extremely expensive.  Is that price in quid?  Doesn't that mean it's like 2X american dollars?  Ugh.

I paid 1k for my bike a year ago and she runs like a *champ*.

That's the thing, BMW's are fairly reliable, super powerful, fancy durable world crossing machines. HOWEVER, if you do have a problem with them - it is likely ONLY a trained and up-to-date BMW mechanic with diagnostics and special tools will be able to service them and in many out of the way countries BMW parts can be harder to come by, than say ... kawasaki.

I've seen it debated time and again at ADV rider - the main argument being that with a Kawasaki or other Japanese bikes, the technology is simple and likely any 2nd or 3rd world machine mechanic will be able to figure out a way to get parts and have your bike fixed and running.

I think there is BMW shops in most countries - but unless you breakdown within proximity, getting your bike 1oo's or 1000's of km's to the shop will be an expensive headache.

Alot of the adventure riders seem to use the philosophy of "it's much easier to visit the backyard mechanic in any village anywhere in the world...keep it simple, ride a simple easy to fix bike."

... I did meet a german fellow who was 3years into a ride around the world this summer, he had an older BMW with leather strapped luggage!

No argument here on that front.  BMW has a *significantly* smaller percentage of the American/Western Hemisphere market relative to...well pretty much every other top-name competitor out there.  Finding parts and a good service tech, especially if you're broken down somewhere remote could indeed be hell.

I'd probably guess that Honda has the highest market share worldwide, with the tremendous popularity of the cub and all (not to mention a lot of other smaller CC bikes.  I really love Honda).

right now its all about money...

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12283006#12283006

I am lost.. so many factors to consider:

family, credit card and loan debts, current laptop getting wasted day by day with new mulfunctions popping up

stress anxiety and general health - spending 6 - 12 month in the East would be super for my nerves

need proper bike drivers liscense too....

i will keep u  updated

I'm in the process of deciding whether or not I want to make a similar purchase, OP.  Looking at a 1994 Honda XR650L next week.  I love old honda bikes -- bitches will run forever, and can be fixed by a child.
