My train ran down a cyclist today
    #12213521 - 03/16/10 05:38 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I commute to work by train almost every working day. With the number of suicides by jumping in front of a train in our country, the odds of experiencing such an event had always seemed realistic to me.

However, today, as I rode the train to work, sitting in the front-most carriage as usual, the train suddenly braked and we hit something, followed by a huge metallic rattling noise. I didn't need to wait for the announcement to know that we had hit a cyclist, the rattling noise being the sound of increasingly small bits of bicycle being thrashed around the undercarriage.

So basically I sat there and looked at the police, the firemen and the railway people cleaning up the mess and hosing down the train. I didn't see any blood and gore, and I didn't go and see if I could get any closer. Fuck that shit.

The thing that surprised me though, was that this does seem to have been an accident. I'd always expected that if it happened to 'my' train, it probably would be a suicide. But I guess it wasn't this time. Probably just a kid making the wrong call on his way to school

Thought I'd share. I'm ok btw. I guess I was prepared somehow.

Seriously?
That is crazy.
I don't know how I would feel if I was in that train.

You know, that though actually crossed my mind. Funny, isn't it? Just for a fraction of a second, and then I just got back to work. And waiting till we got to move again, which took about 2 hrs.

Train "accidents" can be really horrible.  The worst part is that they're fairly avoidable as far as accidents go.  Trains are on linear, predictable tracks and pretty well signal their coming far in advance of arrival.

I used to go to school on a campus where there was two intersections at which a train comes by at pretty high speeds (30-50 mph).  Stats are that every year someone dies, almost without fail.  Mostly drunk people who don't perceive that the train is coming (flashing red lights?  Blaring noise?)

I was always kinda respectful of the train.  It's got a lot going on.  I tend to look both ways these days, just in case.

dang, how do you get hit by a train? lols. always look behind you when turning.

when i was in seattle some dude pushed his ex-gf in front of a bus - i didn't actually see it, but saw the aftermath; apparently he hid in a dumpster and got caught by the po.

I've never been hit by a train, thankfully.

I wonder if it was premeditated or just like a "think fast!"  moment.  If it were the later it must have sucked for the guy.

Shit, that's insane. I don't know how I'd react if I were there. Good thing you're okay.

The only train accident related stories I know of are those rumors about people slipping between the platform and an oncoming train where they get pinned and all twisted but stay alive and die when they get them out. Like the guy's wife in Signs.

Yeah, my father was more than willing to traumatize me to get me to say far behind the yellow line at the subway station.

most likely premeditated. apparently she got ran over by the wheels, it was at a bus stop too, so there were a bunch of people there.

This isnt always the case. I mean, you gotta be pretty disconnected to your surroundings to get hit by one but not every grade crossing is the same.

Quote:

How common are railroad crossing accidents?

Far too common. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, there were 2,384 crossing collisions in 2008 alone. Operation Lifesaver estimates that a crossing collision occurs roughly once per two hours in the U.S. The statistics are alarmingly high. The fatalities generated by these tragic accidents run high - 797 in 2008 were killed, while 8,371 were injured.

The particular spot where this happened is somewhat notorious. Yes, there are blaring sounds, flashing red lights and barriers, but apparently, people (esp. cyclists) get impatient and often decide to take a chance. They underestimate the acceleration of the trains, which reach about 80mph within a relatively short distance. This spot isn't too far from a railway station, so I suppose some people underestimate the speed a train can reach at this spot.

Well, this one wasn't too bad for the train travelers, at least. A good friend of mine witnessed one accident while he was waiting at a crossing. Apparently someone jumped in front of a train that was going at full speed and was basically disintegrated in front of his eyes. Man, this wasn't nearly as bad at all.

In any case, today was much better. Didn't kill anyone on my way to work

We have an indian reserve in my town, and alot of drunk native homeless people around downtown..

Onetime a fellow fell asleep on the tracks and got hit. I was across the street when it happened and watched the commotion and clean up crew, but didn't know what happened until i read it in the paper the next day.

I had no idea train accidents were so common in EU though - that's pretty weird.

Im glad your alright Koraks!
