pressure cooker sizes

Just starting out here, so I'm chock full of stupid questions.
What's the minimum practical size/volume of a pressure cooker for doing jars of various size? We're going to pick up a 6-quart cooker, but would be awfully embarrassed if our jars didn't fit into it. (Doing the normal-mouthed/shoulderless jelly-jar types - 1/2 pint). It doesn't necessarily matter how many jars fit into at once, since we're pretty patient and detail oriented - of course, bigger is better, I'd imagine...but all this came be handled later, since we're trying to keep costs down for now.
Thanks!

You can fit a good amount of 1/2 pint jars in that PC.

You should be able to get 6 half pint jars, 3 pint jars, or 2 quart jars in that baby. It's the same size I use.

I think a six quart might be a bit small. It would do some 1/2 pints with no problem but you are inevitably going to want to use bigger jars as you become more involved in the hobby. I use an 8 quart Mirro and I'm already wishing I had bought a bigger one.

You could boil your 1/2 pints for now and save your pennies for a nice cooker later on.

I agree (with dog) . . . if you're going to buy a pressure cooker/canner, you might as well buy one that is large. It should be big enough to accommodate your needs for as long as you see yourself traveling down this road. I bought one before ever creating a PF jar (this was about a month and a half ago) and I'm so happy with it. It's a 1979 Presto 17qt . . . it ran me $48.50 total on eBay. eBay is a great source, you should check it out for sure. Also other similar auction sites, or the thrift shop. Anyway, good luck finding one.

Heh, good point - and even before my first grow I'm fascinated enough by this process to read about it constantly, so I know I'll be going places with it.
Money won't be an issue in the future, but for now, if it all fks up, I'll feel less stupid if I kept the costs down, then hope I'm cultivating with the big kids over the next year!

Thanks - yes, I agree with dog. We just want to get the ball rolling with our first, then go for a greater investment in the near future. Money isn't that much of an object, but the whole feeling stupid vs. spending too much money at first if it screws up is affecting my decisions at the moment ;-)

I feel exactly the same way . . . I can't stay off these message boards, and if I'm not on them I'm reading teks. I just can't help myself. Don't worry though, as long as you do your research, you'll come out just fine. I'm just about to birth my first ever batch of PF jars, and I have a 0% contamination rate so far. Just go slightly overboard on sterility rather than being lazy, and you'll come out just fine.
Edit - Yep, I definitely hear ya. I was very much alike, and I still am really. Hope everything goes as well for you as it has (so far) for me!
