Does using unsupplemented sawdust spawn to supplemented sawdust fruiting substrate reduce contamination

To answer this question. No it does not. The only thing that is the factor with contamination is the person growing the mushrooms. The cultivator himself. If he creates everything with sterility and harvests his mushrooms correctly he doesn't have to worry about it. Sawdust is not less prone to contamination. They both attract competetors and can contaminate if handled incorrectly.

I would rather have a handfull of grain, a handful of bran, and a lot of sawdust myself. Why throw away the extra nutrition unless the mushroom preffered to not be supplemented.  IMO.

I don't think sawdust is ever fully sterile regardless of supplements.  The point in which all life is dead and 99.9% dead must be very difficult POINT to determine consistently.  Which naturally leads me to another question.  Is the extra time needed to sterilized supplemented sawdust because of the amount of contamination endemic in the bran or other supplements or, do these give the competing organisms a very small chance to out run the desired mycelium? Seem like unsupplemented sawdust would have a tremendous advantage in functioning as a mycelium growing middle man.  Even if his guts do not support a great bouquet of mushrooms.

In my experience working with sawdust as an innoculant and as spawn substrate and for casing cubensis I found it quite lacking in nutrients leaving the mycelium slow growing as a substrate or growing to use without supplementing as an innoculant. I have had deacent results using as a bulk substrate that I inoculated using rye but due to to low nutrients and being so fine and densly packed it was slow colonizing leaving me fighting contaments through the whole incubation periodhead well the addition of 10% peroxide didn't make much difference. I have also had unsuppliment jars of sawdust that I had steralized for use caseing get contaminated before I got around to using them, IMO there are much better technques out there these days such as wbs.
