fanning = welcoming party for contams
    #1220399 - 01/15/03 09:14 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

When you take the lid off your terrarium to fan it with, doesn't fanning push the air around you that could be contaminated into your terrarium? It seems like it would...

if you take the lid off and DONT fan, you still likely introduce contams. the point is: keep the area clean and don't worry about it. or use a bubbler/aeration system to reduce contams.

Well, you shouldn't need the lid to be open for more than 10 seconds, and this isn't long enough to introduce many contams.

are we forgetting about the all important myco-pee? it's almost like a mini immune system for the fungus network. so they should be fine just dont go flickin boogers at em or rubbin em down with petroleum based products.

But you have a good point Niggy. If you use an aquarium air pump ($25 CND) and an air rock ($2 CND) in an internal resevoir of water mixed with H2O2, you seal off the area a lot better, thus reducing contams and increasing humidity. If you puncture two holes just above your perlite layer and then put a filter on those then you can remove the need for fanning to get rid of CO2 (as it is heavier than O2 and will sink to the bottom of the tank and then out the holes as air is forced in).

As a side note- Gas laws state that two different gases will not vary each other's pressure, so you can't pump in O2 to push out CO2, but instead it will bleed out slowly through the holes, carried by its own gravity and lower concentrations of CO2 in the outside atmosphere (ie; air in closet/grow room).

Hope that helps.

Yes just spray Lysol into the air before fanning!

So I could just spray lysol all over the air before fanning.....And when you fav, you take og the lid and just fan it with that right?

Or have a bubbler and holes in the side with filters...

Okay, but if you had filtered holes near the bottom of the terrarium, and then pumped new air in, wouldn't the CO2 be pumped out? Since it is heavier, it would be near the bottom, and the holes, and be the first air to leave, correct?

I take a small piece of cardboard and fan it back and forth over my terrarium. I also lysol the hell out of the room before I fan...

me too (air pumped in at top, holes at bottom - fanning an unnecessary luxury). my air pump has 2 ports - one supplies an airstone in the tub-ib-tub incubator to agitate the water, the other supplies 2 tubs. one pump can do lots, but don't try using one outlet for bubbler and 'straight' air, as the pressure differential will make all the air go the easiest way in.

I think that the cakes do have sufficient enough defenses to ward off contams...  I dont use lysol before fanning, and I don't time how long I leave the lid off....  Sometimes I leave it off 5 minutes or more while messing around...    I havn't had any contams at all...    Just like someone said earlier dont flick boogers at it...

I just open up my setup and fan it. No lysol or anything and I never get contams.

me neither, I just fan, I also have my lid off for a while longer than 10 secs more like 3/4mins, no lysol, although I do put a small amount of a similar product in my perlite

I rely on the fungus having a strong enough hold on the substrate to be able to fight off any thing else

no problems yet

i think youre being overly paranoid in a good type of way.  as long as you dont have a shit load of animals that just had a litter, or youre just nasty, you shouldnt introduce contams will fanning.

pssssst

My fruiting chambers are located next to my furnace to my house.
Probably the dirtiest part of my house.
I have fanned without using Lysol and have never gotten any contams in my fruiting chambers.

Cakes are pretty tuff....after they are fully colonized IMHO.

I've never managed to find lysol in the UK and as far as I know it's not available over here and have never used ANY disinfectant spray of any kind during ANY of my grows {which have ALL been successful & very productive) and haven't found fanning to be a problem as far as contams go.

Shit, I've even been drunk whilst making spore syringes on a few occasions and accidentally slipped and bent the damn needle in half and pulled the plunger out, emptied the syringe and pulled the solution into a fresh one and it still worked even thought the spore solution had dripped all over my hands !

I TOTALLY agree with Roadkill on this one. Once the mycelial network has been completely established they are very hardy against contams !

I think alot of people go overboard as far as lysol, etc is conscerned and that it all just comes down to basic common sense like washing your hands with antibacterial soap etc.

My cat sprays the hell out of his area with lysol before he opens his 20 gallon fish tank..he says he hasnt had any contams yet.He also wears rubber gloves and rinses them with alcohol before his paws enter the tank. Maybe overkill but after waiting for a month for those jars to colonize and then making a casing...He would be pissed if he got a contam.
