Do morels grow in CT?
    #12194511 - 03/13/10 12:56 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I was hoping someone could tell me if morels grow in the northeast. I live in CT and it seems morel season is almost here. I am new to mushroom hunting and would love to find some morels, but I would like to make sure I am not searching in vain.

If there are morels here in CT does anyone have any advice as to where and when to look.

Thanks.

-Dingle

Yep, they sure do grow in CT!

Blacks and yellows and half frees, with the yellows being the most common I believe.

I'd start looking towards the end of April on through May.

I'd start by looking under dead/old Ash and Elm, but they can grow in a wide variety of habitats and can be hard to find/spot.

Good luck!

Actually...click on the link in my signature to view a slide show on the morels I found last year in NY...not too far from CT!

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. It's been pretty warm here - 50's during the day and 40's at night (on average) and now its rained for the past few days. Could these conditions make for an early morel season?

I believe that the soil temps have been in the 50's for like 2 weeks now.

Thanks again for the good news!

Found this one this evening in southeastern CT in my yard.  Hollow stem, cap is part of the stem, growing near a lilac tree and a Norway pine in the shade... a lot of myrtle growing nearby.  I have a morel bed I started in another part of the yard but felt like I hit the lottery when I found this one!  Just wondering what variety it is... a yellow morel?
