The Rice Jar Experiment (Updated w/ pics)
    #12188621 - 03/12/10 08:04 AM (14 years, 20 days ago)

The Rice Jar Experiment

Intro:

Last night in class my professor, who is an expert in Indian anthropology (studying mostly art and temple design), brought up an interesting little experiment that was fascinating to me. He had 2 half-pint mason jars, both had been filled half-way with cooked rice. On one jar he had labeled it with the Om symbol. On the other jar he had listed several "evil/sinful" words in Sanskrit like greed, hatred, etc. (I'm getting the list from him soon). The jars were 3 months old, and while the Om-labeled jar looked like the rice had aged, it was otherwise just absolutely immaculate. The jar labeled with negative words in Sanskrit was so covered in the most hideous-looking molds that you couldn't even see the rice.

Discussion:

This obviously is not a scientifically controlled experiment. There is an equally random chance of 50% that the jars will contaminate or not. I believe if there is any significance behind this, perhaps it rests in the intention and belief structure of the person who prepared the jars.

Dr. Emoto, in What the Bleep Do We Know?, who is known for his photography of how water molecules respond to emotions and intention, has been criticized for not reproducing his methods in independent labs. If intention is the variable behind this, scrutiny and lack of belief on behalf of other researchers involved would deter the effect. This logic seems exclusive and circular, similar to the Christian trick of reducing every argument to faith. Nonetheless, as a variable, intention is a possible explanation and may account for other similar experiments -- as with plants reacting to music and the benefits of positive mental imagery.

Directions:

Since many people here likely have mason jars hanging around, it would be cool if some of you guys were willing to try this out and report back. The professor mentioned he didn't take any sterilization measures. The jars were just taken from the dishwasher, and the rice was prepared in a normal way on the stove.

If you are not partial to Hinduism and are spiritually involved with other beliefs, feel free to substitute other symbols. The main purpose is to prepare the jars with the mindset that one contains good and one contains bad, thus ideally the symbols/words will reflect a moral dichotomy.

I'll update this later with results.

Sounds interesting.

"If intention is the variable behind this, scrutiny and lack of belief on behalf of other researchers involved would deter the effect."

I think this is very logical actually
Its like people who say its impossible to become enlightenend
Clinging to that view is what holds them back from it

On the other hand id say its not about blindly beleiving either
Just being open & aware is enough

Aum

Close friend of mine already did the experiment. There were 3 jars in this case.
The love jar. The neutral jar and the hate jar.

And guess what. After month or so, love jar was normal with no changes, while neutral and hate jars were all moldy.

OK I'M GOING TO TRY THIS MYSELF

first off I'm going to state that I want this to work and if it does I'm going to instigate a change of attitude.

 good luck doing this experiment unless you know of a foolproof way to guard against S-rays.

Like I said I really really want this to work so my bias is actually positive for results.  It would be real proof for me and that's what I have been looking for.

I'm going to let whatever happens happen without conscious at least expectation.

Why don't you do it also. I trust your honesty quotient.

Chronic how about you?

Maybe we can get Diploid too. He's very honest imo.

I've got a harvest of drying weed in my room right now, no way am i gonna willingly bring a growing jar of mould in there with it!

To be honest im not that interested in this sorta stuff, not trying to proove it anyway, i feel that i know for a fact that playing my plants music & meditating with them has helped them flourish, if i tried to proove it i could eaisly drive myself insane & have to go into lengthy debates with skeptics about side by side experiments etc... which is all time i think could be much better spent

Ifit helps open up someones mind im all for it, my only interest is whose mind isit in the first place?

It's everyone who participates mind that will be involved
No need to defend your results if you don't want to, just posting them is enough.

I don't know if the purported success of this experiment is legitimate or not, besides I don't really want to have jars of molding rice in my room.

I am definitely interested in the result of your experiment, though.

Mind does not exist imo.

Anyway nobodies telling you to put them in the same room. Plus they would be sealed correct?

Yeah, that was going to be my next question: Do we seal them or put holes in the lids... cause I'm not sure I've got any lids without holes

I live in a studio flat, im just not really interested in trying to proove this stuff, if i had doubt in me then i would do the experiment maybe, but i don't have beleifs or doubts in any of this spiritual stuff, the duality of beleif & doubt are both secondary aspects when it comes to being, neither of them being conductive to true happiness. Its all mind stuff, my mind beleives this, but doubt that... but this is from first beleiving in the mind itself!

To me its a fact that thoughts affect our reality, one man is free of falling victim to thought patterns & very happy, another man is falling victim to his thought patterns & is miserable, one experiences reality as bliss, the other as misery.

Beyond that, im not really bothered about metaphysical manifestations of mind etc...

To be fair, I've never owned a PC, and only do open-air work.
I've been successful a lot more often than not :awesome:
