Hello I was just wondering if there were any fellow street performers out there... I'm Organizing a tour of the USA with two musician friends of mine. One from Alaska, one from Paris France, and I'm from England.
we are starting in Santa Monica CA. June 17th then going along route 66 all the way to Chicago getting there for June 24th Then we're jumping to Montreal arriving June 27th leaving 2nd of July Burlington Vermont arriving July 3rd and leaving the 5th New York City 5th to the 7th I was thinking about Busking Washington Squ Park... Philadelphia 7th to the 14th July Richmond Virginia the 14th to 21st July Asheville NC 21st to 28th July New Orleans 29th July to the 8th of August Salt Lake City August the 11th to 18th San Jose San Francisco Half Moon Bay area ending the tour 31st of August
To give you an idea of what we do, check out videos of performances, have a look at our myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thefairytaleexperience
I've been looking on the internet and haven't found any info on Busking we can't really afford permits... we have gigs in each town we're going to... but it's always nice to get to know the streets doing a bite of the busk!
I thought you, funk crew, would have some ideas for me. Thanks Rose

In Santa Monica, there is the 3rd St. Promenade. Basically an outdoor strip of fancy stores where tons of people are shopping. Musicians can busk there, but only with a permit. It's $35 for a year. And all the musicians there suck because they run off anyone who is too loud or draws too big of a crowd. Even with a permit, you can only play in one spot for 2 hours then have to move. Cops come by with decibel meters and will put it right up to your speaker or whatever, and if it's over the limit they write you a $200 ticket. They don't take kindly to awesome musicians.. Pretty lame. But if you want to make some money busking.... that's the spot. Just have to keep it chill. But if you don't have a permit, you run a high risk of getting a $250 ticket or something.
You can go a mile down the beach to Venice beach, and play on the boardwalk pretty much freely. Also more of a diverse crowd in Venice than you would find in Santa Monica.
Hit me up when you come to Santa Monica.. although I may be in Ohio then.. but if not I can hook you up with a bunch of musicians and we can get some jams going
As for your other cities, good choices, shouldn't really have any problems in most of them... richmond and philly can be purty ghetto. Asheville and burlington is like hippie heaven.

yeah man just check the cities you plan on going to. youll probably need a permit to perform on the street.
if you apply for a performers permit you might need to show a work visa also.

nah, no permits needed, maybe if you're doing electric.
i have a couple friends that are out and about right now - both play banjo - one's up in norcal right now and the other one's in new orleans. i just talked to my friend in new orleans and he said he was in the french quarter playing.

No... You'll definitely need a permit in Santa Monica unless you're playing on a street with no people or something. Even then the cops would harass you.. without a permit you'd get like a 200 dollar fine. Most of the other cities he listed, should be perfectly fine, but SM cops have a stick up their ass about people busking. I mean, you could probably set up at/near the Santa Monica pier without being harassed too bad.. but don't play on the 3rd St Promenade without a permit for sure.
