thanks for the help. i do have a pressure cooker, and will do my best to keep the rye free of contams. i was wondering a little more about watering them after i injected the substrate with spores. how oftern should i spray it, and on average, how much water would you say you used per spray? (i'll prolly be using quart jars)

Why would you water it? The idea is to seal it in a jar, inject spores and let them grow. The spraying comes in later after your jar has completely colonized and you have cased it. Then you only spray if the casing layer get's too dry. I think you better go back and do some more reading before you try to grow. Maybe I am misunderstanding something...

that's more what i was talking about. thanks 3mshroom. so i only water when the casing looks dry? some suggested watering 4 times a day (spraying terranium not actual casing), and i found it hard to believe the casing would dry 4 times a day.

one seemingly fool-proof way to get moisture right.
put your grain in a pot, small enough to fit inside your pressure cooker, cover with foil, and pressure cook 1 hr.
wait 24 hrs. and do it again.
then load grain into jars and pressure cook one more time.
the grain will cook up and absorb the perfect amount of water from the steam.
the 24 hr. wait lets surviving endospores hatch.
the final time is to ensure that the jars are sterile afer loading.
