an okay casing set up?
    #1218463 - 01/14/03 03:32 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I've got a bunch of spent cakes, I want to case them.

Is this an okay set up?

mix vermiculite/peat moss 50/50 and add water until it reaches field capacity, microwave the mix for 10-20 minutes.

crumble cakes into the bottom of a clean plastic container, spoon verm/peat mix over the top, cover with saran wrap.

From what I have read, this is the simplest way to achieve a proper casing.  Am I missing something? Are there some further easy steps I could do to ensure better fruiting?  :ooo:

wellllll they've finished ~3 flushes, so they're almost spent ... but adding more nutrients will encourage new mycelium to form i was hoping? the peat moss is nutritious like brown rice flour?

Peat moss adds no new nutrients.

why not just use vermiculite then? is it just for texture?

Yes. A good casing medium should not contain any nutrients. If they did they would contaminate on ya.

hmm. i was under the impression that the reason for microwave "sterilization" was to eliminate the bacteria that could grow on the new nutritive layer.

The casing medium may be harboring foreign contaminants. Nuking kills them.

Well some things can grow on peat moss, but mushrooms are not one of those things.

I too, recommend spawing one of the cakes. A half-gallon or gallon jar of rye could be colonized with a single pint cake. I have, however, had some success by "spawning" the mycelia after it has been cased in this sandwhich fashion, by utilizing a bottom layer of compost, breaking up the cakes, adding another layer of compost, and topping it off with a vermiculite casing layer.

I'm not sure if this increases the chance of contamination, but I have yet to have a casing contaminated. I do take "extra" precautions, such as constantly having the air in the room filter through a charcoal/HEPA system w/ ionizer, as well as an ion filter / collection plate.

Hope this helps.

It would be more effective to break up a cake (I have heard a cheese grater works well for this) and mix it up with compost/dung/straw. then just wait for it to colonize and then case it. This may be a little too advanced for you seing as how you are just starting out (or so it would seem), but if the cakes are spent it isn't like you will lose anything if you fail. Check the faq.
