Mushbox Substrate Jars + Treasure Coast
    #12183328 -

Yes indeed this is my first post.  Yes indeed I may not know what I'm doing, haha, and I will openly accept any and all advice.

Alrighty, using the Mycodome 3.0 from Mushbox, along with 6 of their pre-sterilized 1/2 pint substrate jars, and Treasure Coast syringe. I'll just copy/paste from my "journal" so far.

Treasure Coast (10cc) + 6 ½ pint Musbox Substrate Jars
A.  Inoculated  May 2 (12:00pm)  Placed in Mycodome 3.0 inoculation chamber.  Temps fluctuated, remaining several degrees below 80 during the first 6 days.  No signs of Mycelium growth by May 9 (10:00am) No signs of bacterial growth by May 9 (10:00am).  Inoculation chamber was moved & adjusted.  Temps now stable between 82-85 with addition of heated blanket underneath chamber.  Humidity 30-40%

Okay.  That's the deal.  Like I said, I am new, this is my first grow, but I didn't go into this blind.  I read many teks on here.  I recently followed a WBS tek and added 2 jars to the chamber (1 Illusion Weaver, 1 B+).  Hopefully they'll fair better and show quicker growth, but my MAIN question is...

Has anyone had any experience with Mushbox substrate jars???

I'll be checking for growth again on the 14th, by then the original 6 substrate jars will be 12 days in, and the WBS jars will be 5 days in.  I'll be sure to post my findings, especially if shit isn't looking good!!

Hopefully patience IS a virtue.  :ooo:

I spare my words on the rip-off committed with the Mycodome, as well as on the jars and the "Illusion Weaver" spores you have there:mad2:(<- This is not really for you, but for the fucks that sell that bullshit for prices like that).

However, you should definitely lower the temperature.
You want a temp around 75. Preferably between 70 and 75 degrees.

The hot temperatures you have going on there right now, favor contaminant growth as well as they slow down mycelial growth.

The RH outside of the "dome" doesn't matter. It's important what the RH is inside! I doubt this is what you meant when you said 30%-40%. If it really was you have a problem. You want that to be in the upper 90ies.

Seriously, you should read as much as you can. In the beginning best would be to read up all the basic info concerning PF-Tek and fruiting chambers.

You could have purchased all the things you need for like 40$. And each time after that you hardly spend any money on this tek.

I took a watch at the video and noticed that it's laden with misinformation. Damn assholes. If they sell stuff that much over priced they should at least provide legit info on the procedures that are necessary.

Check out this side and learn from the videos and descriptions provided. You'll see that you don't need much to successfully cultivate mushrooms at home.

Oiii!!  I hate being ignorant.  I read a lot on Teks...but nothing on the best places to purchase things from, serves me right!!

I think the Mycodome should still work fairly well as an incubation chamber, but I've already spent a fraction of what it cost ($150..) on a homemade fruiting chamber.  (Shotgun fruiting chamber Tek)

I think I was just too eager to get started and wanted things ready to go ASAP.  The 6 substrate jars however, I'm losing faith in by the day.  They just look dry...really dry...where as my WBS jars look like they have the perfect amount of moisture...only about 3% of the seeds stick to the glass.

As far as the humidity levels INSIDE the chamber...uhhhhhh...yes, they've never been above 42%.  I thought humidity didn't become a major concern until fruiting, but yet again my ignorance preceeds me.  haha.  Alright so as for RAISING the humidity inside the chamber...I'm guessing take the jars out, mist the inside real good, and put the jars back in?????  The temp/humidity read-out is digital, however seems pretty legit.

....in closing I'd like to add I shall burn Mushbox to the ground for possibly causing my first grow to be an epic fail......

the jars dont need to go into the humidity dome. just the cakes when they are 100% colonized. and yeah I've never spent that much on this hobby and I've grown lots of mushrooms. I find the best is always homemade.

Indeed! My statement wasn't about the colonizing jars.

Alrighty.  5 days ago I removed one of the 6 substrate jars (still no growth shown in any of them).  I removed the substrate, and felt like I got slapped in the face from the smell.  I couldn't see any visible contamination, however the smell was enough to conclude something went wrong.  I let the remaining 5 jars do their thing for another few days out of good faith, yet after seeing BOTH of my WBS jars showing growth, I decided to terminate the remaining Mushbox Substrate jars.

I'd like to think it was just my inexperience that caused the jars to fail, and I'm not trying to bash Mushbox, but ALL 6 jars had the same horrible smell.  Hopefully not all the jars they send out are like this.

Anyway, I cleaned the jars out, and followed the PF Tek (brown rice and verm) and now have 6 freshly inoculated jars with a recipe made by my own hands.

I figured I'd just bump this thread since I have relatively the same question and don't want to start a whole new thread.

I did the research on the mycodome after I had purchased and much like this guy I just wanted to make a safe bet.  The money isn't really an issue and I'm not the most hands on guy so I probably would have bonered getting a poor man's box together.

Anyways, I upgraded to the six substrate jars and it just dawned on me; won't I have to do something to the jars?  They can't just come ready to knock up.  Won't I have to hydrate the substrate or something and then re-sterilize them before I knock 'em up?

They should be hydrated and pre-sterilized already.  But there is too many factor before arrval that will make it hard to back track if any problem occurs , eg. Moisture content, steril procedures.  Doing it yourself will build technique, confidence and an better understandind to pin point the contam point if any.  You will feel as if your not doing it right the 1st time until you experience it succefully, then it becomes childs play.
